McIntosh MR78 upgrades?
Cerrot - I read a rumor, and I think it was here on Audiogon, that one of the Scandinavian countries has eliminated FM altogether?I do get the public radio stations, which is what I listen to. So, jazz, classical, and alternative. I really don't c...
Thrift store tune treat for half-buck + tax
I'm not a big classical enthusiast, but somehow I managed to collect a heck of a lot of classical albums over the years. I too have picked up these albums at thrift stores in great condition, because it would seem that back in the day real classic...
Record Cleaning Machine
VPI for that money. I got mine after it first came out, whenever that was? It will probably outlast me.Kenny
McIntosh MR78 upgrades?
I picked up my MR71 for peanuts in the early nineties and cosmetically it happened to be excellent. The electronics were not good. I had the Modaferri mod done with the alignment, and it sounded great after that. Later, I sent it to Sam Kim in Mon...
Best Ratios for a Newly Constructed Listening Room
Don't forget to take into account your speakers, as different models may require specific placement.Kenny
Please Critique my Setup and Recommend Upgrade(s)
+1 for fstein.Start with speakers and then the amp. Go to as many audiophile stores that you can stand and listen to speakers in a room with enough space to equal your own. If you can find them, see if you can listen to some of the recommendations...
Has anyone had experiences good or bad with speaker isolation or isolation in general ?
Mains,I have received the same excellent results that you have reported using Symposium Super Plus platforms under both my speakers and subs.Kenny
When people upgrade from Thiel
It may not be an obvious step, so what more are you craving? I still own my Thiel CS 3.6 speakers, but my musical tastes shifted as I got older seeking out a more relaxed sound. Now, I have 300b amps and Horning Speakers, so I kind of flipped 180....
I need a good Preamp
Wefman,You first have to realize that spending more money on anything audio will not give you, "your better sound." You can spend a ton of money on two different automobiles sight-unseen, for example, and while both would demand quality and perfor...
Why do Harbeth P3ESRs sound different?
I would check into yogiboy's point. I'm not familiar with the details of Harbeth products, so do your speakers have a serial number, for example? Perhaps, there were enhancements done within the same model and why your friend's speakers sound slig...
SS preamp with tube amp
Charles,Good points. I don't want to hijack Greg's post, but I thought that the addition of open baffle subs, that want to be away from walls, would give me the low level detail. I'll have to see, because things are slowly improving as the subs ar...
SS preamp with tube amp
Atmasphere,You may have unraveled an issue that I'm experiencing. This refers to your statement about the quality of a solid state preamp for lower level detail. My main speakers want closed corners for reinforcement, so I got subs for fill-in. I ...
SS preamp with tube amp
I'm not familiar with your Aerial speakers, but picking up on the 86dB spec. I never felt that I did my Thiel CS 3.6 speakers their justice due in trying to drive them with tubes, so also 86dB. They would have probably benefited from a fine 200w S...
Legacy Audio Classic HD Speakers with or without Sub
If one's speakers got the goods, then a sub(s) is not necessary (IMO), unless the room is not set up right for those speakers. My solution to add subs recently, was to add fill-in, because I could not provide closed corners for my speakers that be...
When and how did you, if at all, realize vinyl is better?
Back in 1985?, when I was still impulsive and purchased the first available CD player, there were two brands, a Kyocera that sounded like mud. The best thing that digital purchase did for me was kill my impulsive nature, instead of accelerate it l...
