Myrtle Wood
Good one, Jmslaw.I was a little surprised by the myrtle wood thing too, but I give Cardas the benefit of the doubt because I assume it is being sourced from "scavenged" trees, i.e, dead or blowdowns or whatever. Don't automatically assume he's out...
Help with Bad Power
Sounds like you do indeed have terrible power. First, try lifting the grounds on the various pieces in various combinations using cheater plugs. This is very cheap and may at least improve the hum problem. Most simple surge protectors won't do muc...
Power conditioner question
A large part of it, perhaps most of it, is in the mind, but it is real, not psychological. The visual cortex is extremely "power hungry", as it were, and so any extraneous visual activity will reduce the apparent acuity of the auditory system. Tha...
Where do tubes matter most???
lastwaltz, my guess is that you haven't heard a "really good" ss amp, as (1) there aren't very many, and (2) they are all pretty expensive. My list of "really good" ss amps under $5k and $10k retail is: Ayre V5x ($4500) and Pass X350 ($9000). Perh...
Why Do Martin Logan Speakers Lack Dynamic Energy?
Electrostatics are highly, highly placement and room sensitive. Don't assume there is something wrong with the speaker until you have exhausted every placement possibility (or your patience, whichever comes first). Having said that, no planar is g...
Where do tubes matter most???
The biggest sound difference, tubes vs. SS, will be in the power amp, hands down. Having said that, I do not use tube amps for that very reason: they sound too much like tube amps, and I can't live with that much deviation from neutrality. Tubes a...
Johnny Cash - Rest in Peace

Subwoofers?
Get the Stadium and stop worrying. It's just so much more musical, and still has astonishing output capability. Avoid the temptation to buy the Storm, it's not nearly as good. And contrary to the above:(1) Bass "speed" is indeed an issue, and is in...
What Do Amp Guys Think About Bele Canto Evo2's?
They are amazing amps for the money, all of what was said above is true. I would add that they are much better as bridged monos, or buy a 200.4 and bridge it to stereo. I can't think of a single amp in the world that can compete with these at thei...
Question About Low Frequency Sounds
Hey 2001Impala, thanks for the laugh, that was a good one!
Off the Shelf Substation...?
It's just a big isolation transformer by the looks of it. It should work as well as any other of similar construction. Ask Sean, he has posted about DIY transformers numerous times in the past.
Add a subwoofer or not for two channel only?
REL Strata III, either one or two. A small sealed-box sub that will match very well with a small room, adding deep bass without going so deep that it overpowers the room. These are very good subs and work well in either mono or stereo setup.
Tony Furtado, check this guy out
I've been hearing him live for years in little bars in my area (Hood River/White Salmon), and he is very good.
Subs with balanced inputs?
The better RELs have them and they are useful if you have a long run of IC. It's usually better to run the RELs off the power amp terminals though. If you do decide to get one, get at least a Stadium III; anything less is a waste.
Is there a Great Integrated Tube amp for $3-4K
I went through this very quest recently and the short answer is no, it doesn't exist. I ended up back at separates. I would second Jeff's recommendation to look into the BAT VK300x. The only problem is that they're still so new that they're defini...
