PLEASE match Advice Pass Labs X350.5 (20k) to Hovland HP-100 (2500ohms) Miss-match ???
I don't have anything to add to what's already been said but out of curiosity what's it about your Aesthetix Calypso that you feel needs improvement? That is supposed to be an excellent preamp.
Another soundstage question
Thanks. To your point, the realism of the soundstage improved significantly by replacing my SS preamp with even a moderately priced tube preamplifier so I tend to agree with your recommendation. Except I'm not ready yet to take the plunge since I ...
DAC upgrade or Amplifier
I assume by your reference to Nelson Pass you have a GFP-750 (as opposed to a GTP-750) and that's a pretty decent preamp. I have had the same unit paired with a GFA-555 for over 20 years now in my upstairs system but I only use it with a turntable...
Switched from Yggdrasil to Gungnir Multibit.
Just out of curiosity, what is the benefit of this design to trigger a relay when loss of signal is detected? Never heard such a thing before.
Digital Music sounds too bright?
If I understand ivan's points correctly, they perhaps explain why upgrading the power cord and the power supply which replaced the flimsy wall wart, had the most noticeable affect on the SQ coming out of my modest streamer and DAC, respectively.
Picking an amplifier
If you can really stretch your budget to $1600 (asking price), there's a Krell six channel amp for sale right now on Audiogon that should be really nice. It's also very configurable which is a major plus.
DAC purchase:new or used?
Your budget is right in the sweet spot for my great DACs, new or used. If your source is limited to playing only Redbook CDs, the general opinion, with some exceptions, is to use an R2R (resistor ladder) design DAC. Schiit multibit type DACs seem ...
DAC upgrade or Amplifier
I have a DACmagic Plus and I know it does not support MQA. So in the OP's case, regardless of the streaming source, the output is not MQA'd (new verb).  I also did get an upgraded PS but a different brand from the one mentioned above. It did impro...
Which Budget Friendly Floorstanders Next?
Erik, thanks for the detailed response. I'm tempted to experiment a little bit with my ML Aerius i speakers since access to the crossover is quite easy.  The only element of complication is they also have the power supply components on the same bo...
Digital Music sounds too bright?
The only way to tell the brightness is (only) from the digital source is to try an analog source like a turntable. But aside from room treatment, I felt both my streamer and my DAC sounded less "digital" when I upgraded the power cords. Incredible...
Wonderful visit and 5-star customer service at Audio Doctor in Jersey City, NJ!
I must confess that its a big turn off to me when one b&m store puts down another one regardless of the reason. If I owned one of these stores, which I wish if I could, I would go out of my way to even promote other stores, particularly if the...
Which Budget Friendly Floorstanders Next?
Erik, out of curiosity, does the rule of better (brand) capacities to improve the SQ apply to all speaker brands that you have owned/tested or it's something unique about the two specific brands you listed? It just seems like a no brainer given th...
Wonderful visit and 5-star customer service at Audio Doctor in Jersey City, NJ!
It boggles my mind that some so called members attack instead of encourage folks who share their experience with the few still remaining brick and mortar places to actually touch and feel the audio gear before putting down our money.  What do you ...
Impedance Question?
Very informative thread. Thanks for asking the question sqitis. Maybe this was mentioned and I missed it but is there a simple mathematical relationship between the value of the coupling capacitors and the output impedance or other variables are ...
Impedance Question?
Why would they not use a higher value capacitor if that improves the sound and provides more pairing options? Cost can't be the reason since the price differences is not much. There must be other reasons or design tradeoffs.
