Looking for amp advice (punk, rock & reggae edition)
Good discussion. Speaking of class A amps, I just bought a tube integrated that runs in class A and with only 10wpc it delivers a dynamic full-bodied lush sound driving a pair of 90dB/1m/1w speakers in my small listening room. Something about the ...
Who has Luv for the Lyngdorf 2170 and is thinking about the 3400.
Kenny, good to hear from you. That a lot to say from someone who has owned real nice audio gear including some great tube electronics. Can you comment on how do you like the room correction feature of the Lyngdorf and particularly how does it affe...
speakers with balls
Without a budget specified, sky is the limit. Furthermore, in my experience, rock music only sounds good and "rocks" if/when you listen at higher volumes. If your room size is small to medium and you listen to your music at lower volumes, you’re b...
Phono stage gain too high??? Should I return it??
The OP's comment about other phono stages with 60dB working well is confusing at best. Anything with higher than 50dB gain only works well with a LOMC cartridge unless your line stage is super low gain borderline passive. Something doesn't add up.
Speakers least affected by room acoustics
I'm very intrigued by the Lyngdorf unit, especially by the all digital design. Only wonder if might sound too analytical or too "clean".grannyring, how do you compare the Lyngdorf sound to something like an all tube pre/amp system? Does it sound a...
speakers with balls
I think Zu and Magnepans are some of the least "rock" friendly speakers out there. I'd add lower end Martin Logans to that list. Any modern three way floor stander with a >10" woofer in a $2K (used) price range will sound better.
Classic Over-reaction!
^^^^^ Best advice.
Question for tube aficionados
"The difference NOS tubes will make is like cables - not much."Interesting analogy except with cables you can show them off, not so much with many tube designs, particularly preamps. Just like anything else in audio, the depth of one's pocket is t...
The ups and downs of tube vs. SS...
"Solid state is cardboard or paper mache. Tubes are liquid and human sounding."That was my (subjective) opinion as well until I heard the Pass XA25 a friend just purchased last week. Paired with his floor standing Omega speakers it sounds lush and...
Speakers least affected by room acoustics
Our family room is a 20'x20'x20' cube that opens to the kitchen area with some windows near the corners. I have my Martin Logan Aerius i speakers along one of the 20' walls about 13' apart and the listening couch is about 12' away and the floor is...
Classic Over-reaction!
The moral of this story is that the audio/video electronics need to be on a dedicated electrical circuit. The dimmers in particular are noise monsters. In most homes, its a lot cheaper to run a dedicated 20amp circuit than buying even a mid-priced...
First Tube Amp
An $800 Chinese made tube integrated amplifier is not necessarily considered cheap and should sound good. The main issue with the amps in that price range is not their sound quality but their consistency in quality. If yours sounds good and is qui...
Now, I'm confused.
Forgot to add that the Unlimited also has a decent phono stage, its a hybrid SS/tube circuit but sounds real good. Or you can just get an all tube phono stage preamp from Aric at a couple hundred $ less.By the way, I'm a little confused by OPs ref...
Now, I'm confused.
I have had a GFA555 and a GFP750 for my vinyl system for many years and I also have a NAD c165BEE preamp in another system. I've paired both preamps with my other amps - McIntosh MC2200 and Vincent SP-331 and none gave me the wide/deep soundstage ...
MAKING THE JUMP ... From Inherited Speakers to the right choice < 2K Price
I’m not familiar with your Luxman gear but in my experience the Vandersteen Model 2 speakers need some power to show their full potential. I’ve tried mine with amplifiers ranging from my own 10wpc Class A tube to 200wpc McIntosh MC2200  as well as...
