New Release CD Players $1000 - $1500
I don't know if anyone already mentioned the Marantz SA-14S1 but I heard a few SACDs played through it at a friend's house this past weekend and they sounded significantly better than his recently demised California Audio Lab HDCD player - not sur...
New Release CD Players $1000 - $1500
I know the OP asked for only a CDP but just as another option, I think a separate CD/SACD transport and a DAC can provide an additional degree of flexibility worth considering. And it should be relatively easy to stay within the $1500 budget and g...
Who makes coax speakers?
Most speakers designed by Andrew Jones use coaxial drivers. These range from moderately priced Elac to high end TAD or Pioneer. Omega speakers can also make you a design with single drivers both on front and on top. Rarely come up for sale but I s...
Pass Labs
How did we get from Nelson Pass to Joseph Stalin!
Pass Labs
Damn, I just hit the lottery....Now I need to decide between Boulder 3050 and Pass Labs Xs300.Please help me decide! So you ask what's the rest of my system and size of my listening room. Who cares!
Looking to upgrade my towers
If you want too keep the budget low for a passive, the Schiit Sys is a good option. It's basically a source selector switch with a volume control, just like most other passive preamp and does it well. It doesn't add or remove anything in the audio...
MMGs
ps, how'd you characterize the differences between the MMG and the .7? Just curious.
Raven Tube Amps
Its impressive to hear that the Duette 2s can fill a room of that size without loosing focus, imaging, or even create a reasonable (size) soundstage. Raven gear is audio jewelry... Congratulations on a great system and the new house.
MMGs
I'm new to the MMG experience as I just got a pair a few days ago - used so they are broken in. Mine came with Sound Anchor stands which raise the panel roughly 6" off the ground, at the lowest position setting, I switched them back to their OEM s...
How to measure the preamp output?
I would have thought the combination of the preamp maximum output voltage, amp's input voltage sensitivity and to some extent the speakers sensitivity, serve as good guidelines in terms of how "stressed" the amp is under certain volume conditions....
Here is your Groovey-Lookin' Tube Amp
I bought another similar model, a little smaller @ 8.5 wpc for my office. Streaming Tidal through my iPhone and playing through a pair of very small back horn-loaded single driver Fostex (BK-40H, from Madisound) on my desk. I find the sound warm, ...
Amps from the 1980's -- What gear holds up sonically? Reliably?
From a reliability perspective, I've only lost a single 4 amp fuse (out or four) in my Adcom GFA amp and I've owned it since 1987 and it has been brutally abused. On the preamp, the pots/switches are getting a little noisy but the system still sou...
Absolute top tier DAC for standard res Redbook CD
While I agree one should not dismiss a product based on its price, you hardly ever see anyone hook up a $1000 component to a $20000 piece in a given system and perform a blind listening test. Similarly, there are a lot of disappointed shoppers who...
Amp upgrade for Aerial Acoustics 10T's? (
Don't take this the wrong way but if it were me I would hold off and reevaluate my budget if at all possible, before spending the $1K on something that may not end up being much of an improvement over what I already have. Or at least wait for a gr...
MMGs
I can definitely attest to that MMGs suck up serious current. I just got a pair this past weekend and been playing around and driving them with the different amps I have around the house, e.g., pair of McIntosh MC2200, Vincent SP-331, and an Adcom...
