Tube amp selection- for Magnepan 1.6QR I had the VTL MB250's driving my 1.6s. I had a Copland preamp in front of it. The MB250s are triode-operated amps so I had the sweetness of triodes along with authority. That system had a lot of dig to it with the bass and pacing it gave the music.
Berning ZH-270 Replacement I had a ZH-270 that was mated to Chris Sommovigo's Stereolab Angelus speakers and it sounded terrific. I moved it and other componenets in my system to help come up with the down payment on a condo. Then the bottom fell out of the market and not l...
Replacement EL34 Mullard valves for Leben CS300X Doesn't the CX300 use EL84's?
Bedroom system for my 10 year old son Pick up a used Great American Sound (GAS) Thalia or Thoebe preamp and mate it to a GAS Son of Ampzilla power amp. Cheap enough on Ebay, fun names, and gets him into having pride of ownership and separates like the big boys. Surprisingly, this gear...
Magnepan vs Ohm/Walsh ? I have had both. I sent the Ohms back to where they came from. The Ohms didn't hold a candle to the Maggies for my taste. Besides, I tried other omni's like Decware's version of the application and they too were better than the Ohms.
Seeking a "high end" integrated amplifier Luxman! I own the L590A that runs Class A but you can get into the lowest priced Luxman new at $3500. Everyone that has laid their hands on these integrateds to review them has just loved them. The latest Stereophile has a brief mention of the $35...
$5000 integrated budget: Please help me choose.... Check out Luxman. They have class A-operated integrated amps at 20 and 30 WPC and 2 class A/B ones that have around 100 WPC. I have done separates since getting into this hobby. I recently picked up a Luxman L-590AII 30 WPC integrated on Audiogon ...
Dac recommendations for Mac Book Pro Try the Apogee Mini DAC with a 30-day money-back return policy from Guitar Center. Make sure you order the unit with FireWire connection. I went even further and got a 12 volt power center from Audio Magus that sqeezed more out of the performance....
Apple 24 Bit 96 KhZ I can switch the sample rate of the Audio Midi on the fly with my Mac Mini using the latest iTunes software. I don't have to close iTunes and launch it again when the sample rate setting has been changed. The reason I know this is I am using an Ap...
Looking for some cheaper Speaker Cables-$600 or so Check out Paul Speltz's Anti-Cables. I bought them after expensive cables and I am not pining at the thought of not having the high-priced spread. They just plain make all the other cable manufacturers look like con men.
Best DAC under $ 2,500 on used market You might want to check with Steve Nugent at Empirical Audio as a safe bet. For that kind of scratch you could get something new from him plus he is always up on the latest in technology. He has a new DAC product that you might want to talk to him...
Musical yet Detailed DAC Around $700 I have made the choice of going to an Apogee Mini DAC after several weeks of auditioning. I use it with the optional FireWire connection available on the Apogee. I had been using a USB DAC running off the Mac Mini that I have been satisfied with f...
My First USB DAC Sounds Dull, Please Help Have you checked to see what their return policy is if you can't resolve this? I am sure they would want your complete satisfaction.
To DAC or not to DAC... As far as tube DACs, check out positive feedback online. They did a review of the MHDT Paradisea DAC in issue 31, I believe. Got heap-big praise. |
