Connecting a DAC directly to an amp?
As with so many of such questions, the answer is: "It depends..." 1) If the DAC uses digital means to volume control (bit stripping) it is of course possible - but particularly at lower volumes, the SQ is affected negatively.2) If the DAC volume c...
Is 1990's equipment vintage?
Mine's ALL 'Vintage' - and let me say... gettin' a bit old too?But... still sounding and working A OK. Wouldn't have it any different after now 24 years. Um! M. 🇿🇦
Why is black so popular for components?
Easy, 'cause "Black Is Beautiful" no? 😘 M. 🇿🇦
Levinson No 39 fussy about cds
Nasty to behold for me, as I KNOW this error. Following a few inputs:Yesterday AGAIN I have had to open my unit. The reason, showing this exact error on your YT clip! There are only four Philips screws with serated washers that hold the transport m...
Looking for explanations to ML390S ERROR= codes please
Thanks for the kind responses, one more curious thing to mention is, when opening the load-tray and rotating the CD by a few degrees it sometimes plays just OK right through. Additionally by trying a few restarts, can also do the trick...  However...
Looking for explanations to ML390S ERROR= codes please
Well, the unit's laser lense was replaced only a few months ago and it worked just fine until just now. The technician says "only the designer of the software would know" (if after 25 years he'd be still around...?!?) Contacting Harman seems quest...
Upgrades that met/exceeded your expectations and those that felt short
3 meter Madrigal HPC XLR, to just tangibly replace 1.5 meter Transparent Ultra Music Link from ML390S preamp to PassLabs X350.5. Never did I recall such an unexpected change of the positive kind. At all! It made me wonder, still does, if that Tran...
The secret to a great amplifier...
MC,... haters?!? I love orange(s) and beeswax also, even my own made footers. All I'm a bit sad about, that I've nowhere to fit them great orange fuses - other then applying KY first, and then what? 🥴 Eish man! M. 🇿🇦
Thinking about getting a R2R DAC
@audio2design Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the subject. I'm the first owner of the ML39, vintage 1996, which I had upgraded to a ML390S in ~ 2002. As for the ML36, I'm the 2nd owner for all I can tell. And yes, both are some 25 years old - ...
Thinking about getting a R2R DAC
Thanks for this take. However, I have an R2R DAC (ML36) 20bit, 44.1kHz and an upsampling CDP (ML390S) hybrid, 24 bit, 352kHz. (I hope I got that right :) So,... in short, I prefer the R2R item - by a small/tiny but important margin. Why? Somehow R...
The secret to a great amplifier...
Feeling inconsolable, my amp doesn't take fuses, neither orange nor otherwise. Also not sure using fuse-suppository will have possible, favourable, surrogate effect? Maybe a question of using correct orifice? Any advise please? Oh, maybe sticking ...
Why I enjoy my Luminous Audio passive unit, vs an additional gain stage ( preamp )
@atmasphere Hi, "As best I can make out the Benchmark line drive unit does not support AES48. If a preamp has both balanced and single ended outputs that run at the same time, without a switch to go between the two, then its unlikely to support th...
Thinking about getting a R2R DAC
So I now do wonder, WHAT'S the bottom line of all this techno squabble? Is there a bottom-line? At all. CAN an R-2R DAC sound better than any NON-R2R one, due to its DAC construction - if the analogue output stages are equally well implemented?I'm...
1st Album you Ever Owned?
Actually the FIRST ever was a Shadows 78rpm Geronimo, Apache or Beautiful Land, in 1961/2... I had of course no music system of my own then, and played it (a lot) on the beautiful to behold Schaub Lorenz 'Musiktruhe' of my guardians, when visiting...
