What gives? CD’s, Solid State?
Randy - I'm starting to believe that first impressions about audio equipment are quite close to the final opinion. You are having a very negative reaction to what should be a good system. With that level of negative feelings, break-in isn't going ...
Small Classical Ensemble with Double Bass?
Grimace - The Schubert Trout Quintet is the real winner in this list. A wonderful piece. I have a recording by Andras Schiff which I like a lot but there are many good versions.
Mozart Piano Concertos
I'll add some criticism to the plaudits above:Haskil - Not lively. Understated to the point of moribund.Rudolf Serkin (on DG) - Please. Unattractive pianism mars superb accompaniment by Abbado (an underrated Mozart conductor, IMHO).Brendel - He's ...
I need help with my Equipment addiction
Macdad - Pretty humourous thread but I'll make a serious suggestion. You're obviously a project- and goal-oriented person. Instead of trying to refine your system by a smidgen, why not spend that $800 for an preamp upgrade and buy a bad used piano...
How many versions do you have?
Gawdbless/Larry: I think the Norman version is very beautiful but she and Masur take things very slowly. The personal force of Schwarzkopf's 1950s recording just elevates it above many very worthy contenders. That EMI rerelease is a must-own if yo...
Bass rant
Byegolly - I am with you 100%. I've been to quite a few club rock shows and the mixing (with the bass often being too loud) always left something to be desired. But that is apparently what is desirable since stereo equipment should reproduce the l...
How many versions do you have?
I have six versions of Strauss' Four Last Songs (two by Schwarzkopf, the recordings by Fleming, della Casa, Norman, Janowitz with HvK). The first Schwarzkopf version is my favorite although all of them are at least good.
How organized are you with your music
When I first started dating my future wife, she made fun of how organized my LP & CD collections were. So I thought she has a point and let them get completely disorganized. I then found myself wanting to listen to piece X and spending literal...
Is the B&W 600 series a good value?
Koven - I would look around a little more before you commit. B&Ws are not the last word in speakers. I had B&Ws for years, a similar budget as you (for speakers) and shifted to Magnepans and the difference has been astounding. Visit a coup...
New Jolida DAC for $100???
Has anyone actually heard the new nulti-input tube DAC? Very interesting product roll-out given Jolida's rep.
Speakers help for a newb...
I'll make a different type of recommendation: get speakers you LOVE. Your first impression should be bedazzlement.I have MMGs and heartily recommend them. (Love at first sight.) Two observations: they are cheap but will end up costing you a lot of...
Do you ever wonder?
Mapman - We are one about the Clash. There's an Alan Parsons song about the death of a friend (one of the few pop songs I know of about mortality) that I think you would like if you heard. Not a particular fan of that band but any one who wrote th...
Do you ever wonder?
This issue is only interesting if you separate your subjective tastes from plain-old odd popularity. It's about stepping outside yourself and trying to observe music objectively.I don't like Celine Dion's music but I understand her popularity. Sam...
Speakers in 10-15K price range for Classical music
Neal - I'm finding this a fascinating thread. Please update it from time to time.Like you, I'm a big classical music fan. I'd like to suggest a recording that I think will test any system: the Karajan recording of Salome with Hildegard Behrens. Da...
difficulty finding CD player match for Magneplanar
My reaction is that 200wpc (@ 8 ohms) isn't enough for these speakers. I am using an amp with that rating on MMGs and get some clipping.I'm glad you're on the forum asking questions - you have a world-class speaker with a c*** front-end. There's a...
