Can recommend some non-fatigue SMALL bookshelf for near-field listening?
Why not get neutral passive studio monitors? Studio monitors are what recording engineers and YouTube composers listen to all day long, although they overwhelming listen to powered monitors. But something like JBL 705 passive or ATC SCM7 would fit...
Room Treaments - Where To Begin...
Ethan Winer explains it in detail in Part 4 of his book, The Audio Expert. Well worth the read before haphazardly throwing stuff on the walls. His realtraps.com site also has some good starter articles on the subject.
Introspective of this forum: "Does the Audiophile Community Have a Promlem?" I Say yes!!!
This writer calls himself "aging", but he must not be that old because, while the Web didn't exist in 1987, when that Stereo Review blind amp test came out showing inexpensive amps couldn't be picked from expensive amps, you'd have thought the wor...
Something Millercarbon has preached Be A Better Listener. Do not get mired in data.
It might surprise some that the company probably most responsible for the shift toward "data" is also the one with possibly the best "listening" training.   Harman's How To Listen   Harman uses it to train their staff. The results are here.
Weakest digital link: DAC - Streamer - Server?
@tony1954  Anyone that quotes Audio Science Review as Gospel, really does not actually listen to the equipment they pass judgement on. To them, measurements are everything. How can any review of a piece of audio equipment not comment on the "so...
Weakest digital link: DAC - Streamer - Server?
I agree with @electroslacker, except about buying the best cables. Especially a digital cable. As long as the cable passes bits it doesn’t matter. Goodness, my $8 HDMI video cable passes a whole lot more information flawlessly than my USB audio ca...
You Cant Buy It but you Can Build It
Similar experience, but I don't do it because it's something I couldn't buy. For me, there's a satisfaction about building your own. Also, I don't like to waste money and DIY can be much cheaper. And I respect certain independent speaker designers...
Adding a “safe haven” forum for discussion of tweaks?
@jssmith I do not think this thread was ever about the $1.49 sharpie… I think it was more about segregation and not allowing an opposing view on the subject matter. Yes, I know. It's a metaphor.
Adding a “safe haven” forum for discussion of tweaks?
Gravity, Atoms, and Time, are all impossible to explain scientifically, so they are snake oil. -- teo-audio Gravity has been blind tested many many times. So much so that it is now built into our psyches as one of our inherent fears. On anothe...
Adding a “safe haven” forum for discussion of tweaks?
Sounds like an echo chamber. I prefer to be open to someone convincing me, to my own advantage (saving money, getting better sound, etc.), that my particular belief is flawed through the presentation of evidence. If they haven't convinced me, the...
Adding an ignore list feature to audiogon
I've been on forums for 26 years. I have never put anyone on Ignore. Nor would I.
Is advice from a constant upgrader to be avoided
I can count on half a hand the number of people whose advice I trust. So yes, I'd say almost everyone's advice is suspect. Humans are predisposed to too many cognitive biases to be dependable. And obviously, that's not just in audio. It's in every...
Capital Audiofest, save thyself!
@jakesnak  Never got the Diana Krall thing by Jssmith? Wow, some of the best recordings you will find.  I said it was a good recording. But surely you can find great recordings that don't bore younger people to tears and have better than medio...
Capital Audiofest, save thyself!
I never got the Diana Krall thing. Yes, the music is well-recorded, but she doesn't have a great or dynamic voice. Her voice is kind of smokey. I don't mind that feature in Sade because her music has a beat and emotion, but overall, Krall's music ...
Does Heavy Metal music benefit from a high end audio system?
@pwdmarkI think it takes a certain personality trait to prefer metal (same as with any genre), but I think Tool is one of those transition bands that people can dip their toes in to find out. They live on the border of hard rock and metal, their a...
