I should start with speakers. This I know. I’d like to establish a new system.
Of course it depends on what you value most; smooth rich sound w/ nice subtle details often w/ good 3 D imaging or more live, dynamic sound that can rock out without straining or requiring heroic amplification. Very challenging to find both in spe...
Used tube preamps, Cary, AR, Aesthetix, Wells...........or?
I owned & really like the Aesthetix Calypso 15 years ago. It was very well built & sounded excellent in Avantgarde Duo system then. I owned an AR preamp  100 years ago which sounded good but developed issues & I sold it. I think their ...
The best opening act you've ever seen & heard?
Marshall Tucker Band opened for the Allman Bros in ‘74. Both were great!!
"...and I don't take any advertiser money..."
Excellent comparison rbstehno and fully agreed. Stereophile does a much better job than the Absolute Sound in this regard with John Atkinson’s testing of equipment at least for what test results are worth. The reviewers often try a few different s...
2025 Rock-N-Roll Hall Of Fame Nominees
Once they inducted Dolly Parton into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame it became very apparent that it’s a meaningless honor not based on true rock music accomplishments. She’s a fine person & really good in her genre but rock it ain’t.  Additi...
Directional wires/cables
Thank you jeffbij for your excellent explanation of all of this. I really appreciate it & I’m sure many others here do as well.
Things we cannot be bothered by anymore
I’m done going to see & hear great musicians in even moderate sized venues whose sound gets ruined by big line array speaker systems digitally amplified. Most of the beautiful nuance, detail, tone etc. of their fine skills played on great inst...
How can they not effect the sound
This sounds a bit weird but I’ve seen it done easily & successfully for a dented in soft dome Morel tweeter: simply use your mouth  barely touching the tweeter & suck in like your drinking from a straw. Instant fix & sounded identical ...
Got Innuous, now a DAC
I have an Innuos Zenith & had a Border Patrol which was very nice & musical if not the most detailed & refined as better ones. I tried a few including the latest PS Audio Direct Steam which was quite good in some ways but was strangely...
Pass INT-25, split decision and maybe option?
Might want to check out the Roger’s High Fidelity 65 V - 2 tube integrated. Superior build quality, lifetime warranty & sounds great if powerful enough for you.
Linn LP12 turntable
If the linn sounds very good on a good  system, you know it’s capable of doing so which is all that matters. Any system is only as good as it’s source.
What has been a favourite moment in Audio?
I saw two very funny things in an audio store in about 1980 in Cambridge, MA where my brother worked. The NAD 3020 Integrated amp was the new “hot” thing in very affordable & good sounding amp but had limited power & quality/ reliability i...
Linn LP12 turntable
I’ve heard many fine systems from 1979 to fairly recently that had a Linn . I doubt you could do better sonically for 2 to 3 times the cost even used. Listen to it on a good system in the store & see.
Favorite scream in rock?
How about Johnny Winter on Muddy Water’s Hard Again Album? Mannish Boy cut & others. Turn that up loud on a good, powerful system & you’ve got some real blues fun!
Some thoughts on dust covers
The  generally larger physical size & often non symmetrical overall shape w/ outboard motors or arm boards of the better turntables necessitates that dust covers are not in play when the table is in use. That said, there’s likely a reason thes...
