Solid state power + tube pre or visa versa? So quite obviously "the way to go" or "preferred combo" is whatever sounds best not someones oft repeated dogma. You're off to a great start just keeping an open mind, one thing I would suggest is just don't be afraid to get it wrong. It's the jou...
Virtual System updating problems. Anyone else? I like Al also corresponded with Audiogon during Beta testing of the new systems and forums and just want to say I found the staff to be very responsive and eager to hear and respond to feedback. Was this Miles Davis Steamin LP a rare find? Mono is the way to go love it! Especially versus early stereo recordings! Even digitally mono rocks.
What's your profession? Age? How weird I was listening to a live, 45 minute, version of Pink Floyd's echoes from 1971 over the weekend speaking of albatrosses. Or would the plural simply be albatross? Hmmm.....

Need Help with CD/DAC setup Yes that is correct Mark the only reason to use the digital outs is to send a pure digital signal to a separate decoder of some sort. Otherwise your unit outputs the cd your playing or the cd in the Wadia through the analog outputs.
Does anyone else think this Nope sitting here thinking how good Miles Davis is sounding and wondering what's made you so grim this evening my friend? I say either have a drink......or stop drinking, but whatever you do stop thinking so damn much!
Audio stores in N. Virginia? Yage I concur with you also on Gifted Listener. I used to live out in Reston and bought my first system from there a Bryston B-60 and Rega Planet combo. Tom Unger is a very nice guy and its a nice store for more mainstream SS stuff.
How important is bass to you? This prompted me to run some Bass test tones through my system, JMlabs original Micro-Utopia and suffice it to say I was pleasantly surprised to hear usable output into the upper 30's. No wonder I don't feel like I'm missing much with my speakers ...
What is your favourite Coltrane album ? The Thelonius Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall that came out maybe 6-7 years ago is great and sounds fantastic. One Blue Note/EMI.
Free $3K preamp to lucky listener who names it Speaking of Timbre, I have a Timbre TT-1 Dac back in the day, nice piece of gear and pretty cool looking for its time.
Audio stores in N. Virginia? Let me be the fourth to recommend Deja Vu! Incredible store if you like tubes and analog. I have one of their amps and preamps and couldn't be happier. And welcome to the area, DCer here.
