Power amp for Reference 3A speakers?
I drove my De Capos with Quicksilver Mini Mite Monos for several years. Sounded great. The Mini Mites can typically be found used for around $650/pr.
Loud Humming.
You need this: http://eskc.com/invout.asp?SearchBy=All&SearchFor=75-504Calrad part # 75-504. It's an isolation/ground transformer. Costs under six bucks and worked like a charm. Put it between the coax cable coming out of your cable box and th...
Give up on Thiel 3.6 or try another amp again ?
This has been an interesting thread, and I thank you guys for participating. I'm still in a quandary, mostly because I feel like the same $2000 (or so) that I'd have to spend out of pocket for new speakers could get me much closer to an appropriat...

Drubin is right. I never did say I wanted a warmer sound. Actually, I don't find the Thiels to be overly bright at all; they are revealing of the recording, though, warm, bright or otherwise.

Admittedly, the room is a bit weird--it's 13' x 13', but there is only a partial wall behind me (the hi-fi room opens up into a much larger room with a grand piano and some furniture). The speakers are around 3' out from the wall behind them, and ...
Audio Dropping Out on Rega Apollo and Saturn
I own a Saturn I bought new. Definitely finicky with CD-Rs. Some have suggested that burning at a slower helps (to be honest, some of the discs that skip are so old I can't remember what speed I burned them at). No problems to date with store boug...
Marantz sa 8260: buy or run away
At the risk of beating this into the ground, I'd argue (respectfully) with Myraj about the "matter of time" statement. Granted a mechanical device of any kind is going to eventually fail at some point. So in this sense it IS simply a matter of tim...
Marantz sa 8260: buy or run away
RUN!!Granted it's a nice sounding player, but absolutely unreliable. And even if you send it in for repair, Marantz will only address the problems specific to the disc(s) you send in that won't play. It's just a matter of time before *other* discs...
Thiel 3.6, what will drive them best?
Regarding your question about bridging: if I'm not mistaken, most amps bridged require an 8 ohm load. With the 3.6s rated at 4 ohms (and averaging just under 3) that would be a very tough task.

I just went through the same search in a similar budget. I ended up buying a pair of Quicksilver Silver Monos, but one got lost in shipping (a long, sad story for another time), so I never got to hear them. Bummer. As a "quick fix" (until I can aff...
Music Reference vs. Quicksilver
Drove a pair of Reference 3a MM De Capos with all Quicksilver stuff for a couple of years (Mini Mites, Linestage, and phono preamp). The combination sounded great--far superior to the integrated amps that preceded it (Audio Analogue Puccini, Music...
Drive Bel Canto, Marsh amp with OPPO 970?
As I responded over at AudioAsylum, you can run your Oppo front or mixed outputs directly into any of the amps you mentioned (two-channel only). You're not, however, going to be able to integrate your TV into this scenario without a preamp of some...
Oppo 980H setup and use
Just a suggestion for those looking for a cheap TV set to use as a monitor. Check your local Craigslist, under the Electronics category. Here in the NE Ohio area there are 13" sets for sale for $20 or less every day. Just be sure it has at least o...
$1000 maximum digital purchase coming up
Transport, for now, will be either a Sony NS500V DVD/SACD player or an Oppo 970 (I own both). A better transport would be a future consideration. thanks,Jon
Anyone tried the original Playstation 1 for CD?
To Spareribs: I have the SCPH 5501. I did not know there was another model. This one has a multi-output jack on the back that accepts a cable with three RCA connectors on the end (two for audio and one for video). It does not have separate audio o...
