Silver solder--what wattage soldering iron?
I am with Marakanetz. I used to use silver solder, but no longer do. tough to get a good solder joint, and its not a eutectic solder. Sometimes can sound bright too. I switched to Koester 63/37 with a 285 flux. much nicer sound, less corrosive flu...
Vinyl vs. Hi Resolution Computer Audio
yep, Khsu is correct. source is key. If you copy LPs into digital at 24 176.4 its tough to tell which is which. There are a greater number of hi res downloads that are available, so time will tell how hi res digital pans out. hi end LP play back i...
SPDIF internal sound card or usb converter
AESEBU is the best, followed by SPDIF, followed by USB, based on sonic quality. Have not compared Toslink so can not comment on it. J
Sound card suggestions
As blindjim states, the audiophile 192 card is is great and hard to beat if you are on a budget. If you budget is wide open, then shift gears and buy a Lynx Studio TWO PCI card with AESEBU out; and get either a berkeley audio alpha DAC or the new ...
PC vs MAC laptop as music server
Sound wise the two are very close. A more appropriate question to ask is which type of HD should you use. SS HD wins hands down vs. traditional spinning HD.
Recommend good isolation
Most of the mentioned tricks will work, but the main thing you want to do is replace your equipment shelf with a piece of granite. Then add the extra iso pads, or feet to your player.
how to modify my cdp to accept new power cord
Add the IEC socket. I have done this on several pieces of gear. works well. Scribe the outline of the socket on the back panel of your CDP. Then use a dremel tool with a cut off wheel to cut through the chassis. If you can remove the back panel fr...
DIGITAL CABLES
The AES should have a lower noise clock signal.
Hi Rez digital to Benchmark DAC?
If you want to fed a 24/192 signal to your DAC, no transport I am aware of will do that. You have to use a server based system, with a really good audio card that offers digital out. see the lynx studio TWO card (google). 24/176.4 and 24/192 do so...
Need help with choosing a transport.
Before plunking down your $$$ on a tranports, I would look hard at a music server, with a lynxstudio card as the digital out to feed your DAC. Will likely outperform most of the tranports out there.
Solder Pot Advice
Other option is to look for melting pots for folks who do metal artwork. They are relatively inexpensive, and are easy to use. as mentioned, by other posters, make sure you do the tinning outside. Also if you are tinning wires with hi temp coating...
USB 2.0 does 96Hz?
USB should do 24 bit at 96khz, but it is not very stable. You are much better off going to firewire, or use a pro card that has AES/EBU digital out to connect your DAC to. Apogee and others have dropped their USB 24/96 converters due to issues wit...
My First USB DAC Sounds Dull, Please Help
get yourself a Lynx two card and be done with it. http://www.lynxstudio.com/product_detail.asp?i=12I have a server PC system with 4TB of HD space, with 2600 CDs without any compression and 200 high res 24/192 tracks; smokes any cd player.
WAV file
As Jax2 stated, I ran into the same thing, so I am now using no compression but am ripping into WMA files rather than wave. Only other option is to use Roxio release 6 or 7 which allows you to rip in WAV files and rename the files before ripping t...
FMS Blue
to add what has already been posted, there were 3 versions of the blue interconnect; Blue, Blue II, and Blue III. after that Alex switched to another naming scheme; had one called microwave, but I don't recall where it fit into the line up. Alex w...
