Subwoofer options for Magnepan with crossover betwen pre and amp?
The JL Audio E-Series subs have high-pass and low-pass crossovers and controls. They are wickedly fast and blend with Maggies very well (I've heard'em. If it were in my budget I'd have a pair of E-110s or E-112s.
Need advice on what to look for in a turntable - budget $6K to $10K
I'll be the first to admit--I only have hands-on experience with a few turntables, and I've directly heard several more including SMEs, an AMG, Ayre/DPS, and a few others. But based on what I've read, I'd give a serious look at the Merrill-Williams...
Help, my system sounds lifeless!

Wilson Sasha 2 - too much speaker for room size?
I've heard the Sophias at a high end open house in a room about the size the OP describes. They sounded *great*, with no issue concerning overloading the room. I think it's a good fit for that room size.I've heard many demos at various rooms at th...
Speaker grills on or off?
Easy answer: whichever sounds best to you. In my experience, most sound a little more transparent and open with the grills off, especially if the grill is perforated sheet metal. But some speakers a resonically engineered for the grills to be in p...
What is a good cartridge match for Shindo Monbrison preamp and pioneer plx 1000?
jfn04: I know, Herb takes a different approach to reviewing, but I like certain aspects to his approach, such as judging a component or system by its ability to put you in touch with the music. Plus, he certainly doesn't stand alone in his praise ...
What is a good cartridge match for Shindo Monbrison preamp and pioneer plx 1000?
The Hana moving coil cartridges look promising. They make four models. Two have elliptical stylii available in high (2mV) and low (0.5mV) outputs and two with nude Shibata stylii available in the same two output levels. One thing a bit different a...
Vinyl and subwoofers
First place to start: What is the subwoofer's crossover point? In my HT, my mains go strongly down to 29Hz and audibly to 26 Hz. If my crossover to the sub is set higher than 40 Hz, I get muddy bass and lower midrange.
Help me decide: Grado Gold or AT440ML
Stringreen: Do you know which 30-yr-old Audio Technica cartridge he has? Also, Sevs: Concerning your buddy's $100 upper limit for a turntable: I got into audio in 1972, which is right in that "golden era of stereo." $100 today adjusted for inflatio...

Speaking of the Sumiko Pearl, I have a Shelter 201 that uses the same cartridge body. I think the US import price is a bit high at $310, but I got one from a Japanese vendor on eBay for $166.97 shipped. At that price it's a total no-brainer. It's ...
6922 Tubes!
Strateahed:In my system, while the Russian rocket logo 6N1P’s were indeed very quiet, they’re a bit sterile for my tastes. I think I have a quad of those in my accessory drawer somewhere. Well, yeah. I can see your point, but it can also be relate...

A new stylus includes all the moving parts of a moving magnet cartridge--stylus mounted to cantilever at the front end, suspension in the middle, magnets mounted at the other end of the cantilever, and the snap-in housing holding the whole thing t...

I have a MAGI Phonomenal preamp; it's all handwired PTP and uses four 6DJ8 types; one pair for input buffering (I think) and the other for gain and output. The topology is evidently similar to the Manley steelhead, but without as many front panel ...
TurnTable Quest
You can do the GEM Dandy Polytable for anywhere from $1495 to around $2K depending on which tonearm you choose. It's Stereophile-rated as a Class B turntable; most Class Bs are at least triple the price of the GEM Dandy. It was also an Absolute So...
