Subwoofers.... one 10" or two 8"?
The take away is that SPL is key. And fortunately most music doesn't contain much bass.Exactly, especially given that 2-channel music is the OP's primary use of the system. I have used a Mirage LF-150 (10" x 150w) and an LF-100 (8" x 100w). Believ...
Subwoofers.... one 10" or two 8"?

Shelter 201 Cartridge: I just put it into my system Aug. 6 2016
Thanks, Scott. When I'd play my Denon DL-160 back-to-back with an Audio Technica AT150MLX, I'd really notice the drop in detail when playing the DL160. When I play the Shelter 201 I'm drawn into the music and don't care. If something sticks out, i...
JBL L300 - true myth?
I worked in audio in 1975-6 when these and the JBL L100s were at their peak popularity. The L300s were in the "high end" room in the back, sharing space with the Dahlquist DQ-10, Ohm F, ESS AMT1b, and AMT Tower (with transmission line), driven by ...
Subwoofers.... one 10" or two 8"?
I owned a pair of OMD-15s for five years and had a pair of Mirage MM8 8” compact subs with them for at least three of those years. The OMD-15s are pretty picky about getting decent bass. It requires a solid (e.g., masonry) floor and reasonable pro...
Help Picking a turntable
The Absolute Sound reviews the GEM Dandy Polytable with a Shelter 201 MM cartridge. This cartridge might prove to be a good  match for the Polytable. The 201 is $310 from authorized US dealers, but I just got mine from a Japanese storefront on eBa...
Fremer tours the Audio Technica factory
Well, that thread went off the rails fast. Anybody have any reactions to Fremer’s tour of Audio Technica?
when to get new stylus
Six years is a long time for a stylus unless you only play a few records a month. Generally a diamond stylus has a life of around 1,000 hours. Six years of average listening would probaly be a lot more than that. One of the big advantages of the S...
Why so many headphones for sale with less than 10 hours of listening time?
I read a review of several premium headphones by Herb Reichert in Stereophile a few issues back. He tried out several of the big players and was pretty consistent in mentioning how deep into the music this new generation of headphones can be. When...
Why do I keep torturing myself with remasters?
Check some Fremer articles on Analog Planet that address this issue. He calls out labels that only do all-analog remaster/represses and some of the charlatans. http://www.analogplanet.com/content/reissue-labels-avoid-and-some-best-proceed-caution#...

Why do I keep torturing myself with remasters?
I haven't heard one Beatles remaster worth spit. They're all wrong. I mean really, one needs to remaster the Beatles? They didn't know what they were doing? I always prefer the originals, first pressings if possible. Are you talking about Parlophon...
Help Picking a turntable
It seems like the Gem Dandy Polytable would be a good fit in the $1500-2000 range, especially with the Jelco 750D tonearm featuring fluid damping and detachable headshell. Fluid damping elevates the tracking ability and interchangeable headshells ...
What in the world is going on.....
At $75K I would assume that your signal chain is higher res than average. Also, since the LP playback is the outlier, perhaps there is some incompatibility between your stylus and the cutter head, or maybe you need to play with SRA, azimuth, VTF, ...
Bookshelf speakers and record player for Marantz 2245 receiver?
For the turntable, unless you stumble onto a killer deal on one of the early '80s upscale Kenwoods, JVCs, Denons, etc., you might be better off with a brand new Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC. A lot of good sound for $399.
