K & K phono pre compasison
Kevin told me in a phone conversation that the day he stops learning new tricks is the day he dies. I'm sure in a few years we can look back and say that the "old" maxed out wasn't even close to "maxed".
2010 RMAF Analog Reports + Meet and Greet
All you K&K Audio fans, Kevin is going to be demo'ing his new Sonas Veritas phono pre and line stage in the Analysis Audio room. Having beta versions of these products in my system I say with some certainty that you should make a point of chec...
K & K phono pre compasison
The only phono pre that I have heard that betters the maxed out is Kevin's 3 stage differential design still in beta release only. For all you maxed out owners there is a mod you can do to the PS that will improve the performance at no cost. Just ...
Attention K&K phono pre owners:
It uses a transformer for the MC input, the MM does not and as a consequence is single ended. I just assumed (my bad) that someone buying a maxed out kit would be using a MC. If you want balanced inputs with the MM input stay tuned in. You never k...
Attention K&K phono pre owners:
It has "true" balanced inputs through its RCA jacks. Just use the switch to lift the ground connection. That's one of the virtues of transformer coupling. You can always have balanced connections.
Shelter 901: Optimal Impedance
I've owned a Shelter 90X and currently use a Shelter 9000 and have found 38 ohms to work best for me (my phono pre uses transformers). The Shelters do seem to share some family characteristics. One easy way to determine optimum loading is to decre...
Attention K&K phono pre owners:
The audiogon editor seems to have truncated the web listing. You can view it at the K&K forum under data sheets and LL1638.
Attention K&K phono pre owners:
Well, I have finally upgraded my 3 stage differential phono pre with only a couple of hiccups. Blowing fuses on turn on that seems to be the result of a weird problem with the power switch and a lack of signal in the left channel. In my hast to fi...
Attention K&K phono pre owners:
I've got the parts now and I'm planning on spending the weekend upgrading my differential series feed phono pre. Also have on hand the parts to upgrade my buddy's SE phono pre. I plan on tackling that later in the week. I'll post on how it all goes.

Replace OL Illustrious 3 with Graham 2.2?
An upgrade to the carbon arm and balanced wiring might be a cost effective upgrade. Check with Mark to see what he'd charge. With the current exchange rates between the dollar and the pound it might be worth contemplating. The carbon arm made a ve...
Replace OL Illustrious 3 with Graham 2.2?
Hi, I was wondering if your OL arm was the current MkIIIC with the carbon fiber arm tube. I ask because last summer I sent my older model Illustrious for repair and upgrade to MkII status. The repair didn't take and it had to be sent back. The ups...
K&K phono break-in period
250-300 hours will get you 95% of the way. 500 hours will get you another 3%. That last 2% will happen after ~1000 hours. At last count there are 20 Lundahl signal transformers in my system! I am well acquainted with the break-in drill. And yes, K...
6922 6DJ8 or 12 AX7 tubes better for preamp?
None of the above.
the best kt88 tube there is available?
My bad. I went home and looked at the boxes again and they were marked KT-120. I guess old age must be rotting my brain. ;-)
