Tube DAC or new CD player?
I have owned a Cal Sigma.I currently have 2 Micromega Dacs (2 diff systems). The Micromega's are smoother and have more "body".The Cal Sigma had a tiny bit more "air" and a slightly larger soundstage but was not the smoothest dac I have owned. I th...
Review: Quicksilver Line Tube preamp
Good review.I purchased a Quicksilver LS preamp around 3 months ago and generally agree with what you say above. It is not the last word in clarity and resolution, but its rendering of musical timbres, especially in the midrange is very good. I wa...
$150 Transport anyone?
Although this is something I don't "need" I would be interested because of the price and the size. However, I would also want to see a picture and would like to know the following:1. Is it shielded against RFI?2. Is the fan audible?3. Can you prog...
Headphone Amps
Suggest you check out the forums at Headwize.com and head-fi.org for more info. Also highly recommend that you buy nothing w/o a rite of return. I have tried 3 different headphone amps-Audio Alchemy, X-cans and Earmax. Only the Earmax was better t...
What's the best dirt bag speaker you have heard?
Has anyone out there heard the BIC Venturi speakers modified by Ed Frias at EFE Technology? You can buy the speakers for around $120 or so and the mod costs around $35, if you pull the crossover out yourself and send it to them. This may be a litt...
Best Buy or Good Value in a Transport CD
I have briefly owned a Cal Delta and was not very happy with it. I have a Parasound CBD-2000 which I have been very happy with. Parasounds are no longer made but are available used for $5-700. In another system, I have recently bought a Sony SCD-e...
Tubes Do It -- Transistors Don't.
While I generally agree with what you say about tubes and I have been a happy tube user for many years I would like to point out the following. There are no absolutes in audio as personal preferences and equipment interface issues rule.I have found...
Tube Cd players, Gains and Losses.?
I also agree with Hackmaster. I tried a Cal Sigma dac once, thinking that the tube would "help". The solid state dac I have was better-more refined and smoother.
MoFi versus new remasters
If the Moody Blues remasters sound anything like the Time Traveler Compilation, then the MoFi cd's are much better. I have been a big fan of theirs since around 1968 and of course, have all of their recordings, but, unfortunately, the sound qualit...
Do you remember...
My first tt was a Garrard changer. I had a "45 RPM Adapter" that I would slide over the center spindle. Unless I positioned the 45's perfectly they wouldn't drop down properly. It wasn't until I went away to college that I learned that stacking re...
How long of a wait
I can't always check the e-mail box I use for this site every day and even then I have sometimes had problems with my e-mail software not sending replies promptly. Therefore, I think 24-48 hours would be a reasonable time period.
Worth it to buy cheap, but no audition integrated
I just realized last night that the Sony DVD player I recommended above needs to be connected to a TV in order to easily use its track programming capabilities, if that sort of feature is impt. I have tried the older Rega Planet you are leaning to...
Suggestions for a DAC
Before buying a DAC, I would suggest you go to the website of the EVS Millenium DAC (tweakaudio.com) and read what he has to say about dacs and why he no longer is manufacturing them.
Suggestion for bedroom speakers
If you need to place the speakers close to the rear wall, you may find that speakers with rear firing bass ports will not work well. For example, I auditioned Paradigm Titans which sounded great in a showroom, but the bass boomed when I tried to p...
Worth it to buy cheap, but no audition integrated
Used equipment may sometimes be a better value, but the most important thing to consider is the proper interface and matching of the sonic signatures of your different components.During a momentary lapse of reason, I downsized one of my systems fr...
