Box speakers that sound like Electrostats? How do the Quad 12L's compare to the Spendor S3/5?
Any experience with the NAD C-160 preamp? If this is similar to the preamp section of an NAD C-350, I thought it was not too good (imho, of course). Bright and grainy. If you can find a used Classe DR-4 or Four, or maybe tubes?, this would be better. I paid $550 for a slightly used Quicks...
Help: Searching for Vandersteen-like speakers... If you like the tube sound, especially what you have heard from single ended stuff, I doubt you will find a better combo than the Quicksilvers and Vandersteens. It won't have tight bass. It will have a midrange that you will probably like very much.
grainy sounding high end system There are a couple of possibilities. Something may be broken. Your preamp may not be able to drive your amp. Your amp may not match up well with your speakers. Make sure all of your connections are correct.
Help: Searching for Vandersteen-like speakers... Suggest you try the Quicksilver 60W monos with the 'steens.
Micromega CD players? Any reliable models? If you like the "sound" of Micromega (I do) why not get one of their used dacs? There have been some problems with some of the Stage players and I think the only remaining places that will service Micromega are in Canada or France. While I have ne...
Kenwood KD-500 My 1st apt was in a building that used to shake when buses or trucks passed by. The only TT that would work in these circumstances was the Kenwood. No vibrations seemed to bother it. Used a Grace 707 arm and Signet and Grado cartridges successfull...
budget amplification - what to get? If you can find a factory refurbished NAD C350 for $319 plus shipping (or maybe a slightly used one for the same amount), this would probably be a good match for your speakers. I owned one of these for a little while and actually preferred it over...
Mosfets: The way to go for SS amplification? If the Plasmatronics are the speakers I remember seeing, won't they set the tree on fire? Aren't these the speakers that needed a gas supply to run? Or was it that they emitted a gas from their plasma tweeters?Happy Holidays
Any affordable intergrateds known for huge sound? I have owned the NAD C350 and also ARC Complete. The NAD actually replaced the ARC Complete. Still I felt the same as you do. I then went back to tube separates. Bought a Quicksilver LS pre and AMC CVT-2100as tube amp. Both of these are "hybrid" d...
Modify my scd ce775 or buy external DAC? I think the stock player would benefit from some used MIT 330 cables, which can be had used for around $50 or so. Terminator 2 is ok too. The Micromega dac was Class C in Stereophile's Recommend Components in 1996. Was made in France but is no lon...
Used separates in sub $2k range? Why not Quicksilver LS and Quicksilver Monos?
Modify my scd ce775 or buy external DAC? I can't say what the specific benefits of modding the unit would be. If it elevates its performance up to a SCD-555es level, might be worth it. However, before you do anything, suggest you try a "forgiving" interconnect such as MIT if you have not...
What's an Audio Alchemy Extended Digital Processor It's a dac, but it only has one specialized input. It will only accept a digital input thru an "I2S" (may not be spelling this correctly) input. It was designed to operate with one of AA's DTI jitter reducers, most of which have an I2S output. Thu...
who makes a good set of headphones Suggest you also visit headwize.com. Use the search engines at these sites to limit the amount of time you spend. You can spend days researching this and will not find any clear consensus except that Grado's and Sennheiser's are good headphones. H... |
