Can you ever have too powerful amp for speakers?
Most speaker damage occurs during an event called 'clipping'. This happens when you overdrive an underpowered amp. It's much harder to damage a speaker when using clean power. So if your speakers are rated 80-100 wpc, a 50 wpc amp has a much highe...
Cable Elevators - What do you use?
Puerto, have you noticed differences in sound using different flavor yogurt cups? I would think Strawberry/Banana would work best.Seriously though, no room for elevators in my house....I make my cables take the stairs.....it keeps their bottom end...
Amp/Pre hookups
Well I don't think you will blow anything up, but I don't know that you'll accomplish anything either. Your SLP-05 has a 400 ohm output impedence, which is pretty good for a tube preamp. So impedence mismatch shouldn't be an issue. However, going ...
Gain Question
Summed up very well Markus1299. Don't be hard on yourself though, we all learn as we go through this journey together. It's not the destination, but the journey itself which enthralls us. (I take it that means the Clearaudio Virtuoso didn't work o...
BAT VK-52SE VS Audio Research Ref 3
Arthurp, what it comes down to is there really is no substitute for listening for yourself. Just as with any other piece of gear, or even cables, you will get many opinions, which you may or may not agree with in the long run. I actually don't thi...
anyone gotten a scratch on component and gone mad
02-17-10: CyclonicmanOne time while moving my gear, my arm was scratched by my power amp. I was okay, but my power amp went mad and had to be carted away.LOL! Alright, let's start a new thread on injuries received from components. In 2006 I tore a...
anyone gotten a scratch on component and gone mad
Does snapping the cantilever off a brand new $5000 cartridge while setting it up count? I mean I guess I didn't scratch it but......it did bother me a bit.Years of therapy with a team of doctors had almost made me forget about it.....until this th...
Have any VAC owners tried any KT-88's
I've used Genalex Gold Lion Re-issues in my Avatar Super. I would agree with Tvad that there was not much difference from VAC's stock tubes, though the price is about the same. I found it made a bigger difference changing the tubes in the preamp s...
Gain Question
Actually, I don't know that it will get you that much more gain, considering you will need to run it through your MM input and not your MC input of your Herron. The cartridge will put out a higher signal, but your phono stage will lose about 20 db...
BAT VK-52SE VS Audio Research Ref 3
I'm sure it's all system dependant. I did find a BAT preamp and BAT amp to be dark and unresolving in my system, like Elberoth2. Same as all Jade cables to some extent. I never heard the ARC Ref 3 with a ARC amp, that may have had the hot, whitish...
BAT VK-52SE VS Audio Research Ref 3
Geez Beerdraft, now you're really making me think and if there's one thing I hate, it's thinking. As I recall, all power cords were Stealth Dreams. Interconnects were Jade Hybrid Gold and Stealth Metacarbon. Speaker cables were Jade Vermeil and St...
Gain Question
According to their website, the Harbeth 40.1 has a sensitivity of 84db/1W/1M.You could use a SUT, but it would probably overload your MC input on your Herron. You could however run it into the MM input. If you got a SUT with 30 db of gain, and ran...
Gain Question
Al, actually his Cary SLP-05 preamp has 10 db of gain single ended but only 8 db of gain balanced. I know, this seems odd.
BAT VK-52SE VS Audio Research Ref 3
I've compared a ARC Ref 3 to a BAT VK-51SE and a BAT VK-32SE, though not the VK-52SE. In my system, I'd rank them in this order:ARC Ref 3BAT VK-51SEBAT VK-32SEARC and BAT are just different. The ARC was more revealing and transparent, while the BA...
Gain Question
You can either get a cartridge with higher output, get a phono stage with more gain, or get a preamp with more gain OR some combination of the above.Actually, there are two other options, get more sensitive speakers and/or get a more sensitive amp...
