I say get a new CD player rather than adding a DAC to such an old player. There are lots of reasonably priced players that I think are way better than my 801ES.

I always found the Vandersteen 2 and 3 series to have good bass extension but not the bass slam you are looking for. While the bass can be maximized, I think the lack of slam is somewhat inherent in their design.

I have always preferred using the Type 4, or CV-4, as internal biwire, with each of the four internal wires going to one of the biwire binding posts.

I would also suggest you try jumpers identical to your speaker cable, you may find you don't need new biwire cables. 
C2300 preamp
