if there has been huge improvement in the last 3 years, it might be relevant that the 851C is a 5 year old design, even though it’s a current model it came out in 2012. The BCD-3 was released in early 2017 I believe 
Is my Cal Audio Sigma II too old?
Some prefer the older DAC's, though I think most prefer newer digital technology. I agree the DAC in the Sonos is poor, and I also use mine with an outboard DAC 
Adcom?
Adcom sort of disappeared for a while, but changed ownership a few years ago. Their new line is supposedly updated versions of some of their classic 80's and  90's gear.  I think only sold from website, but not sure...

with gear that good I would think you would want to do your own double blind test with your own system. that's what I did...it was actually fun and didn't take very long, and improved my system for minimal cost...
