I've been listening to Steeley Dan since the mid 1970's and while I enjoy all their albums as well as Donald Fagen's solo albums, my favorite Steeley Dan albums are from  Can't Buy A Thrill through  Gaucho.  IMHO that was when these talented music...
!!!OK OK - I'm Big Enough To Admit I Was DEAD WRONG!!! Class D Doesn't Always Suck!!!
It’s always nice to hear of an audio enthusiast who’s downsized their system and in the process experienced what it was like when they first got started in this hobby. I experienced something similar when after having several high end systems, pu...
What Meatloaf and Beer Have Taught me about Audiophiles
I've been a vegan for nearly two decades but I still miss certain animal flesh foods. Back in the day I really enjoyed meatloaf.  My Mom would make meatloaf with a mixture of beef, pork and veal  with her home made tomato sauce which was absolute...
Dedicated headphone amp vs Headphone socket on amp
You can purchase some very nice sounding dedicated headphone amplifiers for very little money, relatively speaking.  You can compare one to your current setup to see if it’s better than the one you’re using now.  Schiit audio offers a 15 day trial...
Is my Dynaco Stereo 400 worth repairing for resale?
IMHO your question really is a subjective one. I have a Dynakit Stereo 70 that my late Dad built in 1961.  My first experiences with audio were with a system that my Dad had in our Family den. The system was composed of a Fairchild 412 turntable w...
Anyone else constantly curious about amps?
It seems to me that in the quest to find the best sounding audio system, many audio enthusiasts may start out with the intent of upgrading their current system one component at a time, and eventually upgrade further components until the system is ...
Is it possible to find a good DAC for under $50, 000?
I think that once you reach a certain price level  for audio equipment, the law of diminishing  returns kicks in.  From then on you are paying an enormous premium for subtle improvements in sound reproduction that only those with exceptional heari...
Best Audiophile Album in terms of Dynamic Range and Mastering Quality?
Sheffield Labs I've Got the Music In Me By Thelma Houston with Pressure Cooker.  I practically wore this album out back in the late 1970's.  The music was so dynamic with Thelma's powerful voice and Pressure Cooker's rock instrumentals.  A wonderf...
Have you reached your end point with this addictive hobby?
@drrsutliff   it sounds like you’ve had a great ride in this enjoyable hobby! Yes, we are likely close in age. I turned 65 this past summer and enjoy music more now than I ever have; even if my hearing is no longer what it once was.  Every once ...
Vinyl playback - lack of bass?
Would you consider adding a quality graphic equalizer to boost the bass on your turntable?   This reminds me of my earlier days in this hobby where I would drive myself to distraction listening for the most subtle aspects of my audio system. In t...
Have you reached your end point with this addictive hobby?
@drrsutliff   Chasing gear has always been a large part of the Hi-End audio hobby. Why? IMHO, because it’s just an incredible amount of fun.  There’s also the aesthetic component to this hobby which increases exponentially the further up the pri...
Have you reached your end point with this addictive hobby?
At my age I'm no longer chasing gear, but instead enjoying the gear I have. It continues to provide me with listening enjoyment and that's all  that I can ask of any audio system.  Enjoy the music! 👍
Bose Chucks Mac
Mcintosh has always been a luxury brand. And to some degree so has Bose. Owning products from both companies (1962 Mac MR65B tube FM tuner and a 1998 Bose Wave Radio) I can say that when well maintained these products are built to last. However, ...
The DAC Scam - Almost everyone believes the hype
Imho, far too much is made of the objective performance as being the final determination in how good an audio component’s sound is. In reality, there’s far more involved in tailoring the sound of an audio component (ie. Voicing) then just the raw...
From Audio Note AN/J-D to where?
I’ve been in this hobby for 50 years and if I have learned anything at all in all this time, it’s that if you are happy with your audio system it makes little sense to chase gear. Why spend more money when you’ll still be listening to the same mus...
