A Simple Test Yes, it might eat up mylar- don't know for sure, though. In my case, the silk string rides on the platter edge, so cleaning it is easy. I haven't had a residue, yet. However, I put the belt dressing on the string and not on the pulley or platter, ...
A Simple Test El- I haven't been letting the platter come to a complete stop before switching back on. Motor noise differential seems to be most apparent immediately after switching motor off and again when the motor is turned on, so there is not much of a need...
KAB speedstrobe???? Place the stylus in the middle of the record and count revolutions in exactly 3 minutes. Should be 100 revs. Adjust speed accordingly.Cost= $000.00 Doesn't get any moe accurate OR less expensive than that!!
Phono preamp Q re: Technics SL-1900 turntable Seems I recall that Rat Shack als had a battery-powered phono pre for around $30. Mono, so you'd need two for stereo....I'm betting that the battery powered versions have a sonic advantage in this price range.Jim
Phono preamp Q re: Technics SL-1900 turntable Lkdog- There are a number of threads on the topic of MM, MC and other types of cartidges in the archives. Check it out!!RegardsJim
DC v AC The cogging factor Doug points out is one of the larger differences between AC and DC motors. Synchronous AC motors reduce cogging, but not as effective as DC in this area. I chose to go with the OL DC motor kit because, for $500, it solved proble...
DC v AC I'm by no means an expert on the topic, but here's how I understand it. Pure DC doesn't have power fluctuations as AC does, motors are more efficient, quieter and easier to maintain a stable speed. No matter how much AC conditioning and power cord...
Fine speed adjustment on Empire 698 ? I was unable to make any adjustment to affect the speed of mine when I had one. It ran slow, so I put some two-part epoxy on the pulley and "lathed" it smooth and to the correct diameter with sandpaper to achieve the correct speed.
Well tempered arm Joe- I wouldn't use STP as it might eat the fishing line. Besides, $12 to be assured of getting the correct stuff isn't a big deal on a $3000 table. (Plus, they pack it in a special bottle that makes it easy to use.) Yeah, it's probably something ...
Cartridge Loading- Benz LO.4 Thanks, Swamp. I'm going to try to "bracket" 100 and 20K to start. I'm guessing that the next step is probably going to be 10K, then 5K, 2K and 1K, if necessary. From what you all have been saying, I should probably ultimately end up somewhere bet...
Cartridge Loading- Benz LO.4 Doug- Thanks for the insight. I'm guessing that loading is kinda on a log scale in that going from 200 to 400 is a bigger jump that going from 22K to 22.5K? Sounds like I'll need a buch of resistors- do I need anyting fancy or do I just go down to...
Cartridge Loading- Benz LO.4 Doug- The resistors simply plug in on the circuit internally. It's relatively easy, but a little time consuming.
Damping Rega Table It'a an un-suspended table, so the vibrations created when tapping on the base will be directly transmitted to the arm and platter. If that's your only issue, you're home free! Just stop tapping on the plinth....However, if you have other resonanc...
Cartridge Loading- Benz LO.4 Thanks, Swamp and Oz. The phono pre is the "Gold Card" version in the Audible Illusions M3A, if that makes a difference. AI says that MCs typically sound best at the 47K they put in the stock unit. Seems odd to me, but what I know on this subject ...
Where to start? New to Analog The BSR is a bit of a dog- no offense intended. You can get a good used Technics 1200 and cartridge for around $150 to $200, but be sure a DJ didn't get his hands on it first. Some of the Thorens are great, but be careful of which model as some of... |
