Looking for used DAC for Squeezebox 700 $
Those are both good choices. Also Cambridge Dacmagic and MHDT Labs.
Any SB Owners Using Channel Islands Power Supply
Unquestionably, there is more bass bottom, dynamics and at the same time the highs are slightly smoother. It was worth it to me and I have spent more and gotten less improvement in the past with other tweak type components.
High power handling speakers
AV123 LS6. There is a pair currently for sale for $3000. These can play loud with authority at whatever level you choose to play at. Signal is distributed amongst many drivers so they do not work hard.
back to ask again long sorry
I tried some Signal cables a while back and thought they made my system sound like the way you are describing. I tried a Harmonic technology AC-11 power cord and the system sounded much smoother. Also, the Salk speakers are very revealing and deta...
What could I expect to hear from a Class A amp?
I used to have a Krell KSA-50S amplifier about 10 years ago. 50wpc. class A. It had a rolled off top end--trying to emulate tubes. I currently have a Jungson JA-88D 80WPC class A. Excellent sounding unit. Bottom line, you can't just assume because...
Speaker Cables
I currently have anti-cables myself and agree that they are pretty good. Unfortunately, I would respectfully say that the Carver amp is your main issue. It is a reasonably dull/boring sounding amp that was made to emulate the sound of a tube amp a...
OK to remove Tweeter Grill??
Mitch2, thanks for an excellent response. I tried this out a few years ago and snipped off the diffusers on a pair of Vifa metal dome tweeters. At first I thought the highs were much smoother, but after an hour or so, I felt that something was mis...
Platform/Base under heavy speakers - Pagode HD09?
If you are trying to experiment with a minimum cash outlay, I would recommend a 2" thick rock maple butcher block cutting board. A search on google will turn up some possibilities. Mapleshade offers these, but they are quite a bit more money but h...
Jolida JD100 Missing Bass
Based on your description of the sound, I would think the turntable arm needs to be raised up. This should lessen the bass and bring up the highs. Secondly, I would suggest you borrow a cd player and compare. Even a DVD player would work in a pinc...
How make my Ayre system "warmer"?
No one has mentioned this, but I found it to make a huge difference when I placed my power amp on it. I had a rack with glass shelves and when I replaced them with 2" hard rock maple platforms, it sounded like I had replaced the preamp and the amp...
Channel Islands Squeezebox Power Supply?
Based on your equipment list, I'm surprised you don't just shell out the cash and try it. When I added it in my system, I noticed an improvement in bass slam and an overall sense of the music being a little smoother. Also, you could probably try a...
Stereo Subs - Do they need to be identical?
I will have to weigh in with an opposing view. I have had good luck using 2 totally different subs in the same system. YMMV, but I can see no reason not to try it, especially if you already own one sub and are adding a 2nd.
JBL 4311B
The woofer is not glued on, it just has been mated to the surface for so long under pressure that it appears to be glued on. If you have a rubber mallet, you can hit it around the edge of the frame, This may loosen it. Most people use a flathead s...
Tube amplifier bad caps
my experience has been that when filter caps get old you will hear more 60hz hum or buzz from the speaker. the problem you describe does not sound like a bad cap. It does sound like an issue with the power supply however. I agree with the others. ...
Tiny Dancer vs Strata Mini
The sound of these speakers could not be more different. I own Strata minis and they have a full low end with a very clear sounding midrange and slightly reticent top end. They are probably at the limit for a room of your size but would probably w...
