Why is Sony Digital sound more like vinyl?
Vandersteen 3A sigs, Vandy center and surrounds, Cardas Neutral reference inteconnects and bi-wires, Musical Fidelity A308 Integrated and a Harmon Pardon amp for center and rears. If a good recording means imaging, bloom, large soundstage, etc; th...
CD Players Getting Better?
My problem, after extended listening to a player with the new chips, is that the sound of SACD is still better, granted that selection is still an issue, but no more so than it was with CDs in their first few years.
Why is Sony Digital sound more like vinyl?
Agree totally about detail and neutrality, but going from long listening periods of SACD surround and two-channel, to redbook was just *too* disappointing. It's *so* over for me and redbook; that's the point I was making. If you all out there don'...
Why is Sony Digital sound more like vinyl?
Final thoughts on Sony XA redbook performance. I've decided I like the redbook performance of the Marantz SA-14 better. It's just more tonally opulent, even though this leads to some muddying of textures in climaxes, but not much. However, I was j...
Marantz SA-8260--low output and fuzzy bass???
I don't know now. : )I just couldn't justify a separate multi-channel and 2 chan units in the same household. I shold have just bought a supplimentary multi-channel. Oh well, I'll buy the ver. 2 used someday. The Sony I have now, (XA777ES) has the...
Why is Sony Digital sound more like vinyl?
While there is much air and transparancy with the XA777es, what I'm missing is "ambient glow." (I will leave it to CD-player critics to describe what *that* is.) I've also noticed that their isn't as much room interaction with the Sony as opposed ...
Why is Sony Digital sound more like vinyl?
Such an interesting thread. I continue to audition my new, (used) Sony XA777ES and the word that comes to mind is honesty. The dynamic range is very honest. When a solo violin plays, it's rather smallish, though when the orchestra roars, there's q...
Why is Sony Digital sound more like vinyl?
Interesting, I just bought one used (XA777ES),and it arrived a few days ago. I find the redbook presentation laid back, yet clean in a good way. Orchestral tuttis expand with little muddiness. I sold a Marantz SA14 ver. 2 in order to buy a unit wi...
Do You Remember Your First CD Player?
Yes, I bought the first Philips @'83 '84 for $800, after selling my record collection to the Fresno State library for $600. There were maybe 4 Telarc CDs available locally for $24.99 each. (And SACDs are SO expensive at $18.99) I was the only one ...
Another CD Player shopping question
I have a used Sony XA777es coming and i'm hoping it's at least comparable to the Marantz SA14 ver. 2 when it comes to redbook to redbook comparisons, at least in transparency and bass extension. We'll find out. With regards to SACD going "nowhere,...
Marantz SA-8260--low output and fuzzy bass???
My cables are Cardas Neutral Reference fed into a Musical Fidelity A308. The Marantz SA-14 ver. 2 was definitely awesome, but I really want 5 channel, and redbook playback that is decent. My test disc is Holst's "Planets" (Dutoit/Montreal), the en...
Redbook+SACD Player to Replace Denon 5900?
Voodoo is when one pretends he is adressing the inferior lack of resolution of Redbook through the player rather than through the CD itself. While I *can* hear differences in Redbook CD player quality, I'm just not going to lavish money on a Redbo...
Redbook+SACD Player to Replace Denon 5900?
Nothing Rob, under 10K? Anyway: Marantz, Classe, Musical Fidelity all make very good SACD/CD 2 channel players with redbook sound as good as it gets, and the usual extraordinary SACD, under 10K. Numbers are numbers dear, no matter how much voodoo ...
Redbook: only 1/4 of the master tape???
So what is the ratio of loss, if that's the right word, going from say, 96kHz to 44.1K on a redbook CD?
Redbook: only 1/4 of the master tape???
Here's something related from Telarc:"Telarc's first digital recordings utilized the Soundstream recording system which is based on a sampling rate of 50kHz, compared to a standard compact disc, which has a sampling rate of 44.1kHz. The higher rat...
