Old Digital vs New digital.
Do try an inexpensive Music Hall or Project turntable. If you like Classical and Jazz, it's pretty easy to find well-cared-for vinyl. I did the upgrade path as well, and I believe you are right--the front end is the most important part. My problem...
Coping in an Age of Uncertainty
Well, there's no uncertainty anymore. SACD has become an audiophile product, something like MFSL in the '70's. And DVDA....
I'm totally confused about Hi Rez formats
Pabelson writes:"Both SACD and DVD-A are just about dead, however. New releases will continue to trickle out (possibly for a long time, if the audiophile labels decide it's still worth their effort), but trickle is the operative word. If you want ...
Where will audio be in 10 years?
Babbleson writes: "Digital music will be available in a variety of resolutions, however. People willing to pay more for hi-rez will still be able to feel smug about it. (Thank goodness! Otherwise, what's the point?)"Should have done your research ...
Help choosing CD player and cables
A used Rega, (which is warm and slow), with Cardas neutral reference interconnects 1/2 meter, (which are clean and astonishingly fast), is a great combo IMHO. $400 for the used Rega Planet 2000, and $250 for the interconnects.
How Important Is The Cdp?
The only way I got rid of the harshness was to move over to SACD. I know this is contorversial, but I could still feel redbook harshness on some pretty expensive players. And YES vinyl enthusiasts: there is still some harshness on SACDs, but it's ...
Which warm sounding cd player for under $400?
A Rega Planet 2000 used will fill the bill, IMHO. I had one for awhile. The *only* problem I had with it was that the soundstage wasn't big enough for huge symphonic ensembles. Makes a great transport too.
Universal disc player
I have a UDP-1 coming. You'll get a full report, tho mine cost 3K, a little more than what you thought. I listen to large-scale Classical, so the machine will be put through the paces. I'll be listening for sweet strings, focused deep bass, and th...
Spoiled by multichannel????
You're kinda mixing two things in your question: Hi-rez, and multi-channel. While a good *discreet, no gimmick* multi-channel recording of a symphony is unquestionably better than stereo, it's not bad going back to stereo after a few weeks of surr...
Need your thoughts on Denon 3910 vs McCormack UDP1
Bbeezley: would you say the McCormack has a more 'robust' presentation than maybe the Rega Planet or Sony Xa777ES in redbook? How's the bass response, esp. mid-bass bloom? (How does it handle Cellos, French horns, Trombones, etc.)And where did the...
Need your thoughts on Denon 3910 vs McCormack UDP1
Avguru: I find it interesting that you mention the Marantz 8400 as one in a group that you prefer--I found the bass to be OK in this unit, but *lacking* in the very bass slam and impact you find lacking in the UDP1. Granted the Marantz is a less e...
Need your thoughts on Denon 3910 vs McCormack UDP1
Labtec: I'm about to spring for the UDP 1. I like that it's supposed to have an analog-like sound for redbook, but is it robust as well? With regards to the bass, I'm hoping it's similar to the Marantz SA14v.2, which not only had thunderous, defin...
sacd,vinyl, and rebook....
A better question might be, (since this tread is about 'curious' RIAA numbers), is: How many of your SACDs were bought overseas?Of my 43, 30 were bought over at JPC and amazon UK in Europe, and 13 here in the states.
sacd,vinyl, and rebook....
The benefits of SACD are most obvious with large-scale acoustic music, IMHO. SACD just gets strings and suspended cymbal--that audiophile favorite--right. FWIW, I'm an orchestra musician. Not genre bashing, but by the time pop music is pushed and ...
Audio Aero Prestige SACD player ?
Why does it convert DSD to PCM?
