Using solid state rectifiers on Cary SLI80 Amplifier
I'd forget about using SS rectification and just change to an original 5AR4/GZ34 - not new production!
Using solid state rectifiers on Cary SLI80 Amplifier
A good idea to increase filter cap life if they are not protected by a B+ delay relay is to replace the 5U4 with a vintage original 5AR4/GZ34. These have a slow warm up time and don't slam the filter caps like the 5U4 and other rectifiers. Plus th...

A SS rectifier will have less voltage drop and will cause a rise in the B+ voltage. The bias voltage will also be affected if it is not already regulated. Plus the fllter caps will be hit with a turn on voltage surge if there is not already a slow...
Turntable versus tonearm versus cartridge: which is MOST important?
+1 chakster! I do the same with vintage TTs, arms and cartridges!
Power Cord & SPDIF Coaxial Recommendations For Audiomeca Mephisto CD Transport
A Pangea digital coax with Cardas copper is an easy recommendation!
Power Cord & SPDIF Coaxial Recommendations For Audiomeca Mephisto CD Transport
Same thing for spending money on footers under the transport! Simply voodoo science!
Power Cord & SPDIF Coaxial Recommendations For Audiomeca Mephisto CD Transport
Don't waste a lot of money on a power cord or a digital coax cable! If you must have a fancy AC cord a $90 Pangea from AA will do just as well as any three and four-figure cords. I have one in use! For a coax I have a $10 Monoprice. I have never f...
Jazz Fans-- Name some of your favorite, less well known recordings
Here's one: Galaxy In Satchitananda by Alice Coltrane. I first heard this back in '73! Along with Lord Of Lords.
DAC That Punches Above Its Price Point
Khadas 2 Tone Pro! And it even has a built-in headphone amp! $2 - 300!
Impressions of the FU25/1625 Tube in an Amp???
The FU25 is the same as the US 807/VT136. It is a 60Mhz transmitter tube with a 600 volt anode. 25 watts. $10 each new from the Saratov factory in Russia.
Impressions of the FU25/1625 Tube in an Amp???
I say go for it! That way you can report here on its sonic character! My SE FU29 is still in its unopened box! I have three other SE amps on hand to play with - a 45, a 2A3 and a 6BG6 - in addition to the Golden Tube SE40.
Impressions of the FU25/1625 Tube in an Amp???
I found that amp on the Douk mall site. $1500 + $180 shipping. The FU25 is a 7 -pin transmitter tube with an anode cap on top! So no relation to the 6L6 family of beam tetrodes! I in fact have a Chinese SE amp using one FU29 transmitter tube per c...
Impressions of the FU25/1625 Tube in an Amp???
I have a Golden Note SE40 that uses 3 6L6GC's per channel in parallel single end mode. So 21 watts per channel of Class A power. Does it sound like three 300B's in the same parallel SE configuration? No! Different output tubes have different "flav...
Ortofon Cadenza vs. old Ortofon MC30 Super2 ?
I'd keep the MC30 and get a re-tip! 10 years! At least have the stylus examined under a scope to see how much life is left!
Vinyl Buyers: The Premium Price Vinyl v. Cheap Vinyl Ratio
I rarely buy new reissues. Most are cut from digital files. Might as well buy a CD. I search for and buy nice copies of LPs made before the digital era. There are bargains to be found! I bought on eBay Jeff Beck's Wired for $5 - including shipping!...
