Looking for new speakers for large audio room +1 geof3! Good advice!
Audio Research and Acme Audio Labs fuse I have said this before and I will say it again: the sound of any audio component starts with its power supply - not with anything before it - fuse, power cord, wall outlet!
Audio Research and Acme Audio Labs fuse Stick to the fuse rating that came with the component. Using a higher amperage fuse is risking serious damage/fire!
My Experience With Tekton A speaker is just a box with some drivers and a crossover. That manufacturers can make and sell them for the price of a luxury car is ... rather appalling, eh!
My Experience With Tekton I attended three Grateful Dead concerts: Fillmore East (1969), Vancouver (1973, 74). The last two had the Dead's famous "Wall of Sound" amp/speaker array. Sounded real good in the Vancouver Colosseum! I'd like to hear a large pair of Tekton's driv...
Judging equipment The truth is that most well-designed and well-built preamps will sound darn close! Want to hear a real change? Try a different transducer - phono cartridge or speakers! Most electronics today are already pretty transparent to the source.
Waversa, any views So you think that sticking a passive doohickey on the end of a cable is going to increase soundstage a mile wide and deep? And it's only $1000!
What unknown musical artist would you like to share with your fellow audiophiles? Tom Rapp of Pearls Before Swine! I have one LP - Balaclava. Tried to buy All This Shall Pass on EBay but lost at auction!
Need a new FM Receiver that works very well I have several, including a McIntosh MR77 and a Scott tube unit. In present use is a Mitsubishi DA-F10 from 1978. This is the second one I've owned! It is an easy recommendation! Can be found on EBay for under $200! Check out its specs on the Vint...
The Most Philosophical Song You Ever Heard Legend Of A Mind by The Moody Blues! "Timothy Leary's dead. No he's not. He's outside listening!"
How many watts?? Nor a Klipschorn with a 200 wpc amp!
How many watts?? Matching the wattage to the speaker sensitivity is important! You wouldn't want to drive Magneplanars with a 3.5 watt SET tube amp!
How many watts?? The rule of thumb is: 10 times the average power in watts to avoid clipping. So with 80 watts you can use 8 watts average. That 8 watts into a 90 db sensitivity speaker will produce about 99 db continuously - if you can stand to listen that loud!
16 bit vs 24 bit vs 35 bit vs 36 bit vs 64 bit DAC sampling @djones51: All competently designed DACs today have way less than .1 percent harmonic and intermodulation (IM) distortion! You want some "coloration"? Add a tube output stage!
16 bit vs 24 bit vs 35 bit vs 36 bit vs 64 bit DAC sampling @drbond : Wrong! There is NO smoothing of digital "steps"! The reconstructed waveform is presented complete! Increasing the sampling frequency does nothing to make waveforms below 22 kHz more "analog" like! Read my above post. |
