Cheap SS phonostage Get a B7K pro 10 preamp and use the phonostage, the PSE Studio SL, or other Ss preamp, and use the outputs into your preamp and this is a nice phonostage. Jallen
Digital Amplifiers I have listened to the Rowland class D amp, the Nuforce, and the Spectron. The best in musical terms was the Rowland, the others were too shrill for me, dry, no texture, and rather sterile. I am a tube guy who likes valves in the line....Thre may ...
Tube amp recommendation Speakers are a big determining factor in the amp decision. You should look to the Quicksilver silver Mono, V4, ARC VT 100, MKi, ii, iii, Reference line, VS110, VAC, and a handful of others. jallen
VPI Speed Problem Very likely the pulley has come loose a bit. just use an allen wrench and tighten it and the speed should be accurate again. Also, the belt tension may be too loose. The platter should stop after about a half turn or so. Jallen
need help on transparent sounding 12au7 tubes Believe it or not, the Sino/Chinese are very good and transparent. Unfortunately, they just do not last a long time...... 300 hours of so. They are worth it though. Quicksilver sells them for about 12-14.00ea. They are graded for low noise.
Looking for a great el34 based amp Quicksilver, CJ, and Music RFeferece all make/made great EL34 based products.
binding post break in I think the type of solder and solder quality will have more to do with the sound. If there was not good flow and wire saturation, then the sound will be compromised. Binding posts suck up a lot of heat and are hard to heat up properly.
Quality Budget RCA Interconnects AR cables are quite good for the money, and AQ cables for sale at HCM audio are a bargain.
Vandersteen 7 Flagship at CES The Vandersteen 7 were very good at CES with a more open treble than I am used to hearing, and better bottom end control. They were vivid and dimensional. But at the price point there is a lot of competition. Would I buy them if I had the money......
Magnepan MMG or something else I have 3.6's, and had the MMG in the same room. Spring for the difference, get the 3.6, it is better in every way except price. The MMG was too small sounding and not detailed like the 3.6.
Vac 140's worth adding balanced power conditioner? Go direct with amplifiers, especially tubes.
Avantgarde Duos - right for me? The Avantgarde ssounded great at CES in a small room, mae the room seem much bigger than it was, delivered stunning bass, and was very impressive using about .25 wpc...yes, 250 milliwatts, and they were cranking. Try first if you can, but they wer...
CES update 2009 This is an update on CES 2009. First I will talk about the MBL room, always one of my favorites. This room was as bit disappointing for a few reasons. Last year, they were cited a record number of times for playing music too loud....unfortunately,...
NO CES Updates??? I will be leaving tonight for CES and see the last 2 days. I will provide an update either Sunday night or Monday. I had to work Friday so I could afford the trip. I will be stopping at Maggies spot, MBL, Burmeister, and the usual attractions. Mar...
