Favorite Lesser Known Sax Players
C'mon Duane, I know there's a couple more in there...
Favorite Lesser Known Sax Players
Great job, guys! Of course, I expected as much from SD, and Duane drove the point home. It's comforting to know that there is a passionate, knowledgeable jazz community on Agon. Who has been overlooked? ('Passionate'?)
Esoteric DV-50: Any cdp's Significantly better?
FWIW, double-pressed anchovy oil emits less odor and offers a more uniform residue dispersion. Last time I looked it was still available at Rat Shack. If you prefer a smoother, tubey sound, peanut oil (preferably Indonesian stock) is the ticket!
BAT vs. Mcintosh?
I agree with Rgurney, if you like the BAT tube sound look for a used 75se (or two 75se's which could be converted to 150w monos). If you really feel a need to check out SS amps, you might want to check out BAT's new VK220 or, better, their VK250 w...
Any information on the new Ayre C5xe player?
I had the C5xe in my system Sunday and what has been reported is true, redbook playback is vastly superior to the CX-7 and better than CD playback on a D1-X. SACD playback is very good, and these comments are about a player that did not even have ...
Ayre CX-7 vs. Meridian G08 ?
Pardales, that's an interesting observation. I've been auditioning cdp's for more than the past month with the intention of upgrading my 588. In some cases (and I won't be too specific here) the universal platform handled hi-rez material very well...
Ayre CX-7 vs. Meridian G08 ?
I've owned Meridians (506, 508, 588) for over seven years and have never experienced what Chinanico or what CJ relate above. On occasion I have experienced long read times when I load a hybrid disc but the platform ultimately accepts and plays the...
Jimmy Smith - RIP
Like most, I was introduced to jazz through the recordings of Satchmo, Ellington and Miles. But it was Jimmy who really turned me into a junkie. I bought 'Got My Mojo Workin' in early 1965 and that led to 'Bashin', 'Midnight Special' and his BN re...
Where has the respect gone?
Ezekiel, thanks for the opening. To be honest, I've been posting only for the past year on Agon, though I've intermittently followed threads over the past three or four years. While some exchanges have become contentious, the great bulk are engagi...
Any information on the new Ayre C5xe player?
According to Steve at Ayre the first manufactured lot went primarily to Asia. I've been notified that I will be able to audition the C5xe sometime at the end of next week.
Esoteric DV-50: Any cdp's Significantly better?
Yes, please, can we get a list of the music that was used in the shoot out?
Esoteric DV-50: Any cdp's Significantly better?
Brian, I agree with Tim (Tbabb) re selection of tracks. Redbook and hi-rez should be a/b'd; also try to include different genres - after all, the challenges presented by large orchestral music are different than those presented by acoustic jazz or...
Best single-malt Scotch...
I'm on my last night of a business trip to LA and a Welsh friend of ours brought me a bottle of Edradour which I won't crack until I arrive back home tomorrow. From what I understand Edradour is the smallest distillery in Scotland with a "family" ...
Isolation Platforms...worthwhile?
Absolutely, isolate your components. Price will dictate brand and there are advocates of many manufacturers on Agon. Like Vik I own and recommend Symposium products but there are many folks who swear by Bright Star, Neuance, Running Springs and ot...
Ayre CX-7 vs. Meridian G08 ?
Good hunting, CJ. BTW, as Nighthawk points out, Meridian is sensitive to IC/PC/isolation tweaks. Mine is on a Symposium Ultra and Rollerblocks, power running through a Shunyata KCv2, all of which further accentuate its soundstage depth/width. Also...
