Inexpensive Audiophile Set-up?
D,I think NAD has a rep for being detailed and accurate, with good bass control, perhaps not as smooth and lush in the midrange. Adcom has similar rep, so smoother cdp like parasound might be better match. Other contenders from Rotel, Arcam, Marantz.

Don't know anything about AA, but Tom is a good guy, and if he has some connection to AA will give you good advice/info.

1. speaker placement (including and beyond John_1's comment) 2. if you have a live room, play with area rug and heavy wall hanging placement. WAF may be a problem, and velvet Elvis only within 50 miles of Graceland, please! :-) 
Best female vocals on CD
Some great suggestions, to which I'd add Holly Cole. Not sure if it's available on CD now or only vinyl, but some old Renaissance (with Annie Haslam) is worth a listen if you can handle the source.

No one has mentioned Aerial Acoustics nor Revel. In your price range, the AA 10T and Revel Studio, along with ProAc Response 3.8, are worth a listen. 
CD Changers
If you go external DAC, be aware that digital receivers will digitize the analog inputs and then reconvert to analog. Some receivers and pre/pros will have a "direct" or "bypass" mode to pass the analog signal around the AD-DA process. Not an issu...
