AC vs DC motor?
DC motors don't necessarily mean that its power source is a battery, in fact most run off of a DC power source. Why all of this discussion about batteries and none about the advantages or disadvantages?Again, the advantages/disadvantages boil down...
4 ohm vs 8 ohm taps
No, Eldartford, the person saying that attaching an 8 ohm speaker to the 4 ohm tap will cause distortion because the tubes will 'see' a different impedence than if the speaker were attached to the 8 ohm tap, is wrong! When in doubt, use the lower ...
4 ohm vs 8 ohm taps
Eldartford, this is where we disagree. If the 'wrong' ohm speaker is attached to the wrong tap, the tubes DO NOT see a different impedence at the primary. The tubes continue to see the primary winding impedence, whose impedence remains constant re...
4 ohm vs 8 ohm taps
Eldartford, I think that we are saying the same thing, but not understanding our explanations. I never said that the tubes 'see' a 0 inpedence. We both agree that the transformer effectively isolates the speaker load from the load imposed on the t...
THE LATEST---Gold plated fuses?
Are you kidding, Shadorne? Wait until someone posts that the direction in which the fuse is placed will cause a difference in the sound!
4 ohm vs 8 ohm taps
Eldartford, exactly - the tubes do not see the difference of what is connected to the secondary taps or to which taps the speaker is connected. The poster that said that connecting the speakers to the 'wrong' tap would make the tubes 'see' a diffe...
4 ohm vs 8 ohm taps
Eldartford, you know of course that the secondary on the transformer has different taps, 4, 8 and 16 to match the speakers. Those taps simply have different amount of winding to 'transform' the primary winding impedance which is constant. The tube...

Nsgarch, it is not up to Bigtoe to give a 'scientific' explanation for the placement of power amp not being critical, but for you to explain why placement makes a difference. And, as for the reason why long speaker cable runs are worse than long IC...
4 ohm vs 8 ohm taps
Stevecham, use the 4 ohm taps.Atmasphere, further to my other note, the tubes don't 'see' the impedence on the speakers, but the impedence on the primary of the transformers, which DOES NOT change with the whichever taps one uses on the secondary....
4 ohm vs 8 ohm taps
Funny, but the construction manual that came with my Dynaco 70, which I built in 1970, indicates that putting 8 ohm speakers on the 4 ohm taps, while reducing the max power available due to less power transfer, will give LESS distortion and if max...
How to properly set VTF??
Sorry, Sirspeedy, even if I had those recordings, I don't need your level of 'accuracy' in doing my taxes and wouldn't part with them! Would Mercury Wing recordings qualify, however?Salut, Bob P.
Electrostats
I always thought that electrostatics were actually 'voltage' hungary and needed an amp that was stable under a capacitive load.Bob P.
Good musical sub under $500
I think that you will find Paradigm's own PDR10 or 12 to match very nicely with your Paradigm main speakers.
How to properly set VTF??
Sirspeedy, with all due respect, you sound like the accountant who wants to calculate average costs to +/- 0.5 cents because he/she (and the computer)can do division to 3 places after the decimal. One can't get more accuracy, nor need, than 1 cent...
