Does colored vinyl sound as bad as picture discs?
The remark about the use of carbon black to strengthen the vinyl is incorrect. Initially carbon black was used because the previous material used for records (78 rpm shellac) was black and it wouldn't do to change that colour! The very tiny carbon...
Does colored vinyl sound as bad as picture discs?
All vinyl is coloured with something, since vinyl is colourless when produced. The 'black ones are coloured using carbon black.salut, Bob P.
bullet proof amp
I second the Crown amps. My D150 is still working flawlessly after 37 years!Bob P.
Pre-amp out Question
Using the tape out effectively bypasses all of the controls that you have mentioned. But you regain those controls on the integrated amp IF you used a line input on it. If you went straight into the power amp of the integrated then you ust use the...
Stranded vs singal core conductors and skin effect
My point, however, Trelja, was that all salt tastes the same, but people do think that they detect different tastes, because someone has convinced them that salt from the sea is different than salt from the inland salt caverns. Theoretically, perh...
Stranded vs singal core conductors and skin effect
Trelja, So am I, an engineer, that is and an amateur cook. About tasting, it is easy to get people to think that there is a difference in the taste of different salts and inevitably those people do 'taste' a difference, when, unless the salt has b...
Class A, AB
My Crown D-150 is described as a class AB + B. Which means, I guess, that it is a class AB up to power point and then switches to B.Salut, Bob P.
mo' better bass: any substitute for watts?
Still, Atmasphere is not saying that one can get more or better bass by simply having more watts, which was the original question. And certainly not, if the speaker can't do Bass!Bob P.
mo' better bass: any substitute for watts?
Bob_reynolds has it right. depending on what the speaker impedence is at the bass frequency one is talking about, the speaker determines what wattage (power) is necessary to give the note at the required volume. If 100 watts are necessary into 2 o...
Optimum size for music room?
Strangely enough, for concert halls, the 'fan' shape is not a very good for acoustics, but is good for putting more people in the hall and not be too far from the performers. The classic 'shoe-box' large enough to hold about 1500 people is best - ...
power cord for electrostatic speaker
Dazzdax is correct. The 'power' going to electrostatics is simply to charge the screens and uses little power. The 'driving' power comes from the amplifier, not from the stats power source.
Why vinyl?
Les, in a sense, analogue also suffers from resolution limits, for example, the tape that is used cannot resolve the sound to smaller discrete packages than the size of the magnetic particles on the tape. And, of course, the playback of the tape i...
Why vinyl?
Les, in response to my comment, you are effectively saying that for the same digitally recorded event, most people (you included) will prefer the LP playback to the digital playback due to the nicer distortions added during the playback. I agree, ...
Why vinyl?
So, Les, you are saying that the vinyl version of a digitally recorded event sounds better because of the 'added' distortion inherent in analogue playback? I agree, but this does prove, of course, that analogue doesn't sound better because it 'pre...
Why the sudden popularity of 12 inch arms
All emergency brakes (or parking Brakes) are drum brakes, usually on the rear wheels inboard of the rear disc brakes, if the car uses rear discs - many cars use rear drums. All I am saying, is that a well executed drum brake will outperform a poor ...
