Phono/preamp/amp chain. One of them tube the others SS. Which one?
It appears that everyone would start with tube preamp. My current system is more or less balanced, and whenever I am ready to upgrade anything, except perhaps the cartridge, this in fact would be the beginning of an entire system overhaul or totall...
What is going on? No-one buys good stuff priced right.
Jmcgrogan2, I think you are right about the declining audiophile pool, I have this impression too, at least people keep more to themselves. Whenever I read or participate in a discussion here, there are few active participants, it used to be diffe...
Does a sub need to be on the floor?
Oleschool, thank you.Wall mounts for subs, right. Question is how many of them? Depends on desired impact, I guess.Wolfernyc, there are many very good speakers with 6.5" - 8" woofer(s). If you choose monitors you will need good stands and good cou...

Would not want an excessive bloom and certainly would not tolerate decrease in PRAT and dynamics. A little more rounded bass OK. I prefer speakers on a slightly warmer side, somewhat relaxed not uptight. So the idea would be to create a hybrid amp...
Beyond Ayre Pass and Rowland
Someone got to put those Ypsilons against Lamm Reference. Now that could be fun.
Beyond Ayre Pass and Rowland
No no no, it's a dream. They now have a modest $25k hybrid integrated, this might be possible in the future, though for this kind of money used Lamm separates would probably be better, but I would have to compare.

" Like a water.." - great metaphor and probably highest compliment. It does appear that Gryphon has enough of the dark side of Scandinavian psyche, and Ypsilon is Greek at its best.Thank you. Which one would I choose based only on your description?...
Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s?
An ideal violin should have no voice of its own either - it should just be able to convey the music that is in the mind of the performer.

This is not about my current system. It is an open question, I am interested in other people's opinions and rationale. But since you mentioned speakers, though it was implied in my question, we'll assume that either particular speakers work well w...
Vinyl?? Are there alternative materials to press recordings??
Sunnyjim, I stopped buying reissues and just stick to originals, mostly Japanese but also a few German and American from 60s.180g does not automatically give any advantage.

Bombaywalla, though you heard all those amps with different speakers, could you try to describe the differences between them, particular character of each? I am especially curious about Gryphon and Ypsilon. We are talking about superb amps, on the...
Beyond Ayre Pass and Rowland
These three brands appear to be very popular among both audiophiles and not. I am interested in the experience of those who auditioned other amps that seemed a step or two above. This thread is not about asking a specific advice or about system in...
Does a sub need to be on the floor?
To slightly exaggerate - adding subs is a desperate move when all other solutions fail.
Do we really need anything more than 8" woofer and 1" tweeter for medium size room?
Let's say medium size room is 300sqf with 10ft ceiling. Everything is challenging when you want things to be done right.
Do we really need anything more than 8" woofer and 1" tweeter for medium size room?
If you listen to big orchestra and opera you are in trouble from all directions beginning with the recordings and the size of the room. Any system that can convincingly separate and reproduce 100 instruments? They don't even quite know how to reco...
