Quicksilver V4 tubes
Chaps, you can't willy-nilly swap tubes of the same pinout: Filament currents vary from 1.4A for the KT77 to 1.7A+ for the KT150.   Power is calculated from B+ and the current available. Changing from KT77 to KT88 will not provide more power. It...

so called engineers saying a resistor is a resistor at DC they are... some with many parameters that vary with ambient conditions What many enthusiasts don't understand is a change for better in one instance may not be in another. And even wo...

Surprisingly, replacing Mylars with Polypropylene or Teflon [$$$] can have more effect on the sonic signature than electrolytics. AND if your crossovers are matched or selected per drivers, be sure to match the replacement parts to the same values.

@bdp24 It's a cupla decades since I was a manufacturer... of pro audio gear.

5x is standard mfg markup. $300 wholesale is $1500+ retail. Sky's the limit for 'high end'

Yes x 2. Like every other component, C & R have interaction with everything else. You can install "THE BEST" of everything and have an unlistenable system. A slightly veiled cap maybe just the ticket with a screeching tweeter
4 8 or 16 ohms.
Biasing often adjusts the current at a single point. I’ve never seen an AR REF750 schematic, so can’t comment on the efficacy of the bias adjustment as tubes on each OPT leg age. AR had very clever engineers so it’s likely very good. The REF 750 ...
4 8 or 16 ohms.
@tattooedtrackman If you bought the amps used, it behooves you to have a AR tech go through the amps and verify tube performance on a proper test that tests valves as run, not just go/nogo. While tubes maybe matched when new, they age and may not...
4 8 or 16 ohms.
Tubes do not work harder driving 4Ω loads. The tubes drive the transformer  primary impedance which remains essentially the same.  Transformers are happiest driving a matching impedance. When the impedance is mis-matched, so is the power. Tubes e...
4 8 or 16 ohms.
Look at the impedance graph in the speaker review. It's all over the map. The amp will sound different on each tap. Choose the one you like best. It won't hurt the amp or speakers. @larryi Transformers transfer maximum power when source and load...
Why Do Cables Matter?
So I don’t understand how someone would be rolling on the floor with laughter reading patent claims.   @tonywinga  Because the claims defy physics, particularly in HiFi. I read plenty of claims for products on which something we made could p...
Why Do Cables Matter?
Applying for and receiving a US patent requires that the product designer provide some plausible engineering principles to support the patent application   I know... I gots one and was involved in others. As Reagan opined, "The best minds are...
Why Do Cables Matter?
At least some designers of high end cables have obtained patents for their products and designs.   Patent examiners by and large are overworked, underpaid and not expert. Michael Jackson was able to patent his ’moonwalk’ shoes ... something u...
Adding an Sub that doesn't go well below speakers?
@12many How do you do this?   Without instrumentation, the best program is something that has a lot of air, significant low end and plenty of mids. Being of Scots heritage, I naturally had well recorded Pipe and Drum bands. It’s the best pr...
