R&B boxsets....Atlantic,stax,motown,etc....
Hard question to answer. Depends on what style of R&B/soul and which label you like best. Personally, I'm partial to Stax. Years back, they released two box sets called the "Complete Singles." Each set contained 10 CDs. I have the one that cov...
REVIEW: Salk Sound Veracity HT3
Congrats on finding a speaker that floats your boat. It's a good feeling when you get off the audio merry-go-round (at least for a while) and find something that addresses all of your audio needs. A friend of mine in Maine has a pair of the HT3s. ...
Best Platform - pre & amps Atma-Sphere
Look at Silent Running Audio. IMO, they make the best isolation devices in the industry, bar none.
Which musician retired too soon?
Tomryan:Where did I ever say that "even Hooper believes you'd better not do the same to Islam or you get get your head cut off, shot five times and stabbed multiple times in the chest, blown up at work or in your hotel, etc." You should check my p...
Which musician retired too soon?
Tomryan:Let's get away from politics and back to what's REALLY important: the music!! Yes, Peter Green is recording again. Actually, he has been for a while--with a band called the Splinter Group, but I'm not sure if he's still with them. I saw hi...
Using Bad Recording to Evaluate a System
In my experience, the best systems reveal EVERYTHING on a recording--the good, the bad, and the ugly. If you have a system that makes everything sound good--even the worst recordings--IMO it's probably grossly colored.
Ascendo M speakers
I've heard them, but only briefly. They sounded very good to me. One person in the industry who has a lot of experience with the Ascendo--and actually owns them--is Clement Perry from Stereotimes. His email address is probably on the Stereotimes s...
How does my set-up sound?
Most important: How does it sound to YOU? That's the only opinion that truly matters. Too often, people on these audio forums want others to validate their purchases for them. It's the wrong approach. If it sounds good to you, it IS good. If it so...
ELP laser turntable - any comments?
The ELP is reviewed in the latest issue of Soundstage. The reviewer is fair but critical, and all of his criticisms are valid, IMO. I had two friends who used to own the top-of-the-line versions of the ELP, and both returned them within weeks of b...
Help finishing sound room w/ Vandy 5a
In my experience, wool is no better sonically than nylon. Several years ago, when I had a small, easily tranportable system, my friend and I did a test. We set up the system in my nylon-carpeted room and listened. Then we took the system to his si...
Which musician retired too soon?
Tomryan:You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but from what I've read, Cat Stevens never supported the fatwah against Rushdie. He was asked by a reporter about the fatwah, and, from what I recollect, he responded that, if the Koran were inter...
The Stones' Bigger Bang
>>Keep on dreamin'. Tumbling Dice and Hip Shake have been replaced by the Metamucil Waltz.Whatever. I should've expected a typically ignorant response from you. You've contributed absolutely NOTHING to this forum--just smarmy, smart-ass repl...
The Stones' Bigger Bang
It's become de rigeur to bash the Stones--and, certainly, some of the criticism is justified--but I think "A Bigger Bang" is perhaps their best album since "Tattoo You." Only "Voodoo Lounge" rivals it for that title, IMO. Granted, that may not bei...
Absolute Best CD Players Out There Under $12k ?
Whitewind:Fair enough. There are certainly a lot of different ways up the audio mountain, and I don't think one is necessarily more valid than any other. The Meitner certainly isn't infallible--nothing is--and there are plenty of other, equally de...
Favorite Movie Soundtrack
I always liked the "Jaws" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark" soundtracks. It helps that the films are two of my all-time favorites, but I always thought that the music stood well on its own. John Williams is one of the most brilliant film composers I'v...
