Van Alstine pre-amplifiers
You need to get a flat frequency response in your room before chasing the tone and timber. Amen. My guess is that 90% of the debates and discussions here are not controlling for the variable of the room. This assumption helps me sort through th...
Pass labs upgrade path
I'm curious what the OP is looking for sonically. Because sometimes an upgrade of a component isn't the solution, which is why I assume MC posted about Townshend. I thought I wanted an upgrade path for my monoblocks until I realized what I wanted...
The character of analog and digital
Digital recordings are much more uniform. My experience has been the opposite. They vary greatly.
From an MHDT to an Audio Mirror, quick impressions
Interesting. My own comparisons of the Orchid with several DACs show it either outcompeting similar DACs (such as the Denafrips Ares II) or getting very close to other DACs.  I remain convinced that Terry London's review is still valid -- the Orc...
Three videos: SET amps, Chesky, Gould
Glad folks are enjoying them!
Pleasurably better, not measurably better
@ghdprentice You got at the heart of it, first, when you said, "The problem is the measurement problem is so oversimplified… it does not come close to characterizing sound as heard." In early psychology, there is the idea of "minima sensibilia," ...
To pricey
People who have purchased it are inclined to say "yes" for various reasons. Perhaps you're curious what other options might be viable of this type, price, kind of speaker.
Pleasurably better, not measurably better
Enjoying how it sounds to you is all that’s important. Agreed. I was enjoying things a lot and then I decided to try measuring the reflections and frequency curve in my room. After mitigating some peaks and troughs and eliminating some reflecti...
Pleasurably better, not measurably better
"Measurements" seem like it refers to a unified set of practices. But it's a plurality; measurements are of different phenomena, with different scales, all with variable bearing on audibility, let alone "pleasing" audibility.   Imagine if cooks j...
Looking for Advice on Focal Speakers
My mistake -- thanks for the correction. The 936 is not a Be tweeter, it's a  Al/Mg TNF inverted dome tweeter. It's bright in my space, as the Be tweeters are. That's why I conflated them. Ribbon tweeters work better for me, but YMMV.
New Sugden mono blocks have arrived.
Lovely! Congratulations! Please report back about how they sound, what changed, and any other observations.
Cost effective power cables recommendations, low and high power
This thread will immediately head into controversy, so I'll quickly convey my strategy. I bought used Pangea cables -- the Pangea Audio AC-9SE MkII for my amps and the Pangea Audio AC-14SE MkII Power for my preamp, streamer, and DAC. All of these...
Pass Then vs. Pass Now
I have slightly more sensitive speakers and when I went looking for my Pass amp, I was between the XA30 and the XA25. Those who had tried both said there was something especially magical about the XA25. (Of course there's always a debate!) I was c...
Looking for Advice on Focal Speakers
I found the 936's Be tweeter too bright. I love my Ascend Acoustics towers because the RAAL tweeter is (a) not at the top of the speaker and this helps with first reflections from my ceiling and (b) the dispersion is kinder and gentler. I think th...
Tube preamp options
I wanted the same thing and got a 6SN7 based pre and love it. Take a listen to deHavilland (hard to find) or Don Sachs (sometimes used) or Aric Audio as possible options. Aric writes right back and will custom make things.  One other consideratio...
