SS against Tube Preamp
It sure can go either way(good or bad). If you really want to try one, see if you could find a loaner. If not, see what models your considering can be bought and sold without to much of a loss dollar wise.
Unusual probelm with my turntable
I was worried on the drive home because the roads were a little bumpy and I could see the table bounce up and down and I thought that something might get loose. I will take your suggestion and look at the wires of the tonearm.Rangefinder (Threads ...
British sound???
Aberyclark, I forgot to say, it would still be hard to picture the mids they're famous for, trying the EQ experiment.
British sound???
03-15-11: AberyclarkIf I were to attempt to recreate the classic BBC british sound thru my EQ (just for fun), what settings?Aberyclark (Threads | Answers | This Thread)Maybe find a review of one somewhere that gives the frequency response like Ste...
British sound???
I wouldn't say that they emphasize the midrange, they're main concern seems to be getting the midrange right. Doing this, may be at the cost of less treble or bass, since that seems to be their primary concern. With that said, the bass or treble i...
Volume control vs. attenuation control
I would try the combination you like, then do some critical listening. A/B between that and their suggested setting, and see if you loose/gain anything. If it sounds the same (better possibly?), go for it.
Tell me about "tubey" tubes.
SED EL34.
Do you leave your components on 24/7?
Not being an EE, I can't say for sure, but I don't think home audio even has a 100% duty cycle. Most power amps usually don't to my knowledge. So I guess it's how the engineer designed it.
Do you leave your components on 24/7?
Paperw8, This thread and post was the one I believe. [http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?aamps&1296956886&openfrom&13&4#13]
2 Tubes in processor should both glow the same
The way the filament is setting inside may have something to do with it. If you use a regular bread toaster, look at the heating element inside it while it's toasting. The element will look dimmer if it's leaning a against the insulator. The one t...
Do you leave your components on 24/7?
Still, nobody has mentioned what the supposed "more likely to fail" failure rate might be (any tests of this?), and I know if my amps are off they can't fail.Wolf_garcia (Threads | Answers | This Thread)We are fortunate enough if we get a good acc...
Do you leave your components on 24/7?
The link to a post Almarg pointed out covers the way it is IMO. Some electronic components (semiconductors) do not like the big thermal swings, and may fail sooner. Others may settle, and break in to the on always operation since they stay hot all...
American made cartridge anyone?
It seems the US has lost its touch for small fine hands on precision work like we used to do. After quartz watches came out, that seemed to help with the loss of hands on problem. And the US used to make a lot of those fine precision mechanical wa...
Has your HiFi changed your musical tastes
In general no. But, I do listen to something different once in a while that they did a great job recording it, capturing it the way I'd like to see my preferred music recorded. Some jazz will sound good on a mid-fi system because of the way they c...
