Audio Research VM 220 versus the VT200
It's an good amp. A bit of a dinosaur at this point and way too large and heavy. Also they mount the 6550's horizontally which is never a good idea. Over time as the tubes get loose. The front end is similar to the VT100 MkII and MKII so setting i...
Audio Research VM 220 versus the VT200
I just got done repairing a VT200. It's a brute. You were wise to go to the mono blocks although I don't know if the VM220's are on the ARC list of amps that can use the KT120's. If they are, good choice, if not, good luck.
Lazarus Audio any Schematics Anyone?
Atmasphere...thanks for the info.
Lazarus Audio any Schematics Anyone?
If it's based on a Dynaco Pas 3 I can fix it for you.
ARC Hybrid FET/Tube audio circuit
Why not send your preamp back to Van Alstine and let him repair it and update it for you. Might I suggest finding a used Dynaco Pas 3. Inexpensive, and very up-datable. BTW calling me Gary is fine. Calling me Fred...that's another story.
ARC Hybrid FET/Tube audio circuit
Well it's not that difficult. Most ARC preamps utilize both tubes as solid state devices for things like constant current sources. Remember the SP9 and 14 use FET technology that is decades old. There are newer devices that sound a lot better as t...
McCormack DNA 1 Rev A Mono blocks WOW
It's a good idea to have the mother board replaced as well as the old emitter resistors. The early boards had issues with the through hole plating over time and the protection circuit starts to become an issue i.e. false triggering. New filter cap...
McIntosh 2105 - no power from left outputs
Given it's age, they typically need electrolytic caps unless you have blown fuses on that channel. They should all be replaced on the driver boards.
ARC Hybrid FET/Tube audio circuit
The above info is incorrect. The SP9 uses one tube in the phono stage and one tube in the high level stage. The SP14 utilizes one tube in the phono stage. The high level stage is solid state. There are better ARC preamps out there. They had issues...
Need to know Power supply caps for Aragon 4004 II
Since you have plenty of room in that chassis, why not just get a perf board and buy multiple leaded radial capacitors and just string them all together in parallel. Put standoffs on the board and there you have it. A nice update. Amp should have ...

Rogue Zuess tubes won't bias in Ultralinear mode
It could be motor boating. When switched to ultralinear, are the bias fluctuations cyclical? Is it possible that you have low line voltage? Bad solder connection on the ultralinear tap. Bad feedback cap. Possible tube socket issue. Possible issue ...
Any way to reduce pre-amp noise floor?
Good luck finding them. They are somewhat rare and expensive. The majority of ones available now are pulls from old tube scopes, and old military test equipment. Remember, noise is a function of not only the s/n ratio of your equipment, but also t...
Amplifier for Quads
The fact is electrostats prefer voltage amps (tube) not current amps (transistor). That speaker needs only 40-50Wrms maximum. Anything higher than that, and you're looking for trouble. I would also suggest having your Quads updated to include the ...
Robin or Rodin Mod of an ARC SP3-A1???
Thank you for the kind words. Happy Holidays and a joyous New Year to you!
