Why so negative about McIntosh speakers?
Would imagine the "bad rap" came from their dismal offerings in the 70's. Had a room mate with a pair of "low boy" style 250 pounders that looked like "end tables" in cheap fruit wood. Really disgusting looking & not very exemplary sounding. 4...
Problems with Infinity Prelude MTS mid-range
I have 6 prelude mts's, have had extensive problems with the subwoofer amplifiers (5 of the 6 have needed repairs) I've also "blown" two midranges over 6 years, spiders detached from voice coil, possibly from being under-powered, rather than over-...
Buying late model Samsung DLP rear projection TV?
As long as it's really cheap & lamp is really only 150, go for it, not a fan of rear projection TV's but the dlps rptv's can look good when calibrated " not so bright". Should be under a thousand, otherwise competing with new 720p plasmas that...
Used Processor for Cheap as Dirt Magnepan Theatre
The sony ta-9000es's are often 500-ish, but don't do any of the new higher rez audio codecs. 27 lb of audio computer that doesn't sound bad! No multi-ch analog in
Two mono center TV speakers out of phase?
Haven't heard the out of phase comment, but have heard 2 closely spaced speakers playing the same signal can have comb filtering effects (destructive interference affecting frequency response=peaks & nulls) Think your speakers are far enough a...
Buy tubes from Audio Research or not
Buy from ARC, tubes from others may be matched, but they aren't matched at the exact current draw the amp expects to see. You could have a matched set from another source that isn't with-in the range the bias can be adjusted on the amp. Unfortunat...
Audio Research Tube AMP Reliability
Without matched tubes from arc, the amps can be near impossible to retube. Mis-matched input/driver tubes can wreak havoc on the output tubes & other components. Many amps require hand selected / tested parts & ARC is no exception...
Article in LA Times about new "CODE" format
Appears to 96/24 stereo which all dvd players can handle (maybe not output via digital)Don't understand why Burnett is calling it a new format. I'm all for uncompressed hi-rez tunes, just seems silly to call it new. Hope it brings awareness of hi-...
complementary power conditioners
I have 3 equitech 1.5 transformers in nema boxes & use various monster "conditioners" wired into the nema boxes for the "outlets". Don't hear any advantage over the equitech's by themselves, but would assume the Monster units help isolate each...
downsize from ARC CD3 MKII to $1500 CDP happily?
Buy a used ARC Dac3/2 for less than 1500 & a generic CDP as a transport...?
DIY solid gold interconnects?
Some folks argue against "plated" or coated/dipped wire. Pure gold might be too flimsy/soft to hold up to "handling & bending" Probably hard to find ".999999" pure gold wire free of contaminants etc. (easier to find silver or copper that pure?...
Stereophile review of Escalante Fremont
Speakers are using the woofers dust cap for a mid range & upper bass from internal vented isobaric woofer, I would expect the upper bass & mids to suffer...same designer as Talon's. Weird thing was everyone was ethusiasitic about the bass,...
Must see
Looks good to me, maybe a little heavy into vinyl, but sound thinking all the way around...
Screens
Look on videogon! Good quality screen is important. You don't specify format or type, so hard to advise. I have a used stewart 84" diag. fixed frame 4:3 format "grayhawk" screen for sale in your pricerange. (grayhawk is a off white/gray, contrast ...
Equalization and bass traps
I've stuck with 20-80hz using a velodyne sms1 & used placement to get best results above 80. Realtraps look fairly attractive, or guiford covered compressed fiberglass panels
