Garrard 301-Worth the effort? HiFiGuy (Dave)I just saw your post last night, sorry I haven't paid attention. I think you need to fashion the weight on the string for your anti-skate if you already haven't. Otherwise, I don't know how you can set the anti-skate. If you need to ...
Garrard 301-Worth the effort? Wow! I didn't realize this thread was still active. First, it is a creme colored, greased bearing, schedule 1a unit with a black platter in excellent shape. Really excellent, so it didn't need much work other than cleaning the dried grease and re-...
changing anti-skating with clear red vinyl? Is your anti-skate set correctly? Does it sound like you are hearing the adjacent groove?
What kind of 12ax7's are these fellas ? Telefunken's will have a "diamond" molded in the glass between the pins
Favorite Caps ST-70 Rebuild Right on. I still might try the Q's since I already have them. ST-70's seem like potato chips, your can't build just one. I was hoping for a comparative review from someone who has used the caps I mentioned.
Favorite Caps ST-70 Rebuild Thanks guys for your suggestions. Bob L. himself (Tubes for HIFI-VTA Board) recommended the K40-Y's as well. I know all PIO's aren't created equally, but I was shocked how bad the VIT Q's sounded at the output of my preamp. Sort of put me off that...
What is the best storage for cartridges? I would recommend a sealed container with desiccant packs. My concern here is that humidity leads to oxidation (rust). I would absolutely recommend avoiding anything petroleum based, as the vapors will quickly denature rubber compounds. For exampl...
Cartridge installation The test record (Hi Fi News) enables me to check the alignment and resonant frequencies via test tones.

Tonearm Choice:SME or Rega? Dekay-I only considered "that" Denon because it always seemed to come up in discussions as though it were a "gold standard cartridge" of sorts. Since that's not such a great concern to me anymore, at least for the moment, I am still looking for a ...
Tonearm Choice:SME or Rega? Much food for thought, thank you all. It is apparent that the cartridge comes first and that the Denon 103 is more demanding than I first thought. Since I will most likely use my Grado Statement Sonata 1 for at least a short while, does anyone hav...
Is blending power tube brands recommended? Lincoln- Sorry about that.. The Fisher Receiver I (briefly) had was missing it's power tubes (Estate Sale). Apparently I was in error when I assumed they were Telefunkens just like the 12ax7's. My bad. Good luck.
Need to start a collection vinyl must haves. Rickie Lee Jones "It's Like This" has been described as the album you should audition a system with. http://www.soundstagedirect.com/rickie-lee-jones-its-like-this-180-gram-vinyl-45-rpm-lp.shtml
Is blending power tube brands recommended? I have some Fisher tubes made by Telefunken (look for the diamond on the base), they are very good. I would not mix brands in a push pull situation though. Swap them out as sets and make sure you check the bias.
Need to start a collection vinyl must haves. Princeton Records has a lot of used stuff but I buy most of my used LPs at Jack's in Red Bank, they're cheaper and I've had better luck quality wise from them. Most of their stuff is $1.99 so if I get a lemon it doesn't sting too bad. I get most o... |
