Kid Creole & Coconuts
I saw them perform back in the early 80's at The Fast Lane in Asbury Park. It was the wildest, most fun show I think I've ever seen. The girls danced out Hula style in grass skirts and the drummer popped up from behind his kit and crashed the cymb...
When do you choose vinyl over digital?
I'm with Hevac1. If it was recorded for vinyl release (old stuff), that's when vinyl shines. If it falls into the "CD is Best" abyss and wasn't recorded with vinyl in mind, most of the time I find the vinyl re-issue isn't so good.So I stick with t...
Preamps w/ polypropylene caps in power supply?
Dielectric Absorption. Charge up an electrolytic capacitor and then time how long it takes for it to discharge to zero using a bleed resistor. Remove the resistor, wait a minute and read it again, there's more voltage left to come out. This is an ...
Do I have a "balance" problem?
You can also rule out your ears by simply turning around. I think it's room acoustics and speaker placement that are causing your problem. Same issue in my room, left speaker is further from the corner than the right, more rear reflection and soun...

Ouch! Wishing you a quick recovery. Enjoy the music while you're stuck inside.

Atmasphere, valid point, but I didn't know if the offending speaker was right next to the turntable or not. That's a great way to create feedback. I also didn't know if the speakers were in phase. If it happened to me I would have reversed channels...

Still could be feedback. The replacement preamp may have a built in subsonic (rumble) filter or simply not have the low end response that the Audible Illusions had. Herbie's audio lab sells isolation devices, that curing the problem implies feedba...
Wildly fluttering woofer
It sounds like subsonic feedback. Move the speakers to see if it improves. Also try to isolate the turntable. You can easily isolate the problem by swapping channels from the speakers back to the turntable.
Remember the year and first vynil you ever bought?
"Are you Experienced" 1967 when I was 11 years old with my own money.(My first 45 was "big girls don't cry" in 1962 with some help from my folks)
Does amp output V decrease by adding gain stage?
Is your tube amp a "pull" from a console that was wired for Stand Alone? I have an RCA 6bq5 amplifier that sounds much like yours from your description. The matching preamp from the console was very high output. Although I haven't gotten around to...

Pre amp noise
You may need to clean your selector switches and/or volume controls. Next time it happens, power down and move the controls back and forth. You should also clean the tube pins and sockets. Are you sure it's not crosstalk? Whenever I play vinyl, I c...
Best way to warm up the sound
The JD9 has dip switches for loading, capacitance and gain as well as two sets of outputs, high and low gain. Look for the chart concerning those settings and you'll see how customizable the unit is. It's not just MM/MC or Hi Gain/Lo gain, it's ev...
