300B amp options
A variation on TWL's suggestion is a 2A3 amp and using Sophia Meshplate 300B tubes with 2.5 V filaments. I have a pair in my Bottlehead parafeed 2A3 amps and they are very nice. That gives you the option to explore 2A3 tubes but does limit you to ...
Balanced impedence?
Before the advent of high fidelity , conventional wisdom held that matched impedances were the way to go when transfering audio signals. I don't know why or when, but 600 ohms developed as a standard and still holds today for some applications. I ...
And what do Maggies sound like near a wall......
I would explore Lowther drivers or equivalents in a folded horn cabinet like the medallion, or other horns like Klipsch. These can actually benefit from the bass reinforcement of being placed close to a wall.Check out Lowthers hereThe other proble...
Soundproofing???????????
The problem is that the wall is too solid. Vibrations on one side pass straight through to the other. You need to physically decouple your wall from theirs, which will not be cheap or easy. You could build another wall that is not attached to the ...
What Speaker are Great for Rock and Roll $5K-20K
$5K-20K is quite a range. There are a lot of speakers in this range that will rock. In fact, I can't imagine a $20K speaker that couldn't rock. I have never heard a Bugtussel but I would be hesitant to take the recommendations of the Rolling Stone...
Stereophile Test CD questions
Very few full range speakers will reproduce bass down to 20Hz. A lot of subs won't do 20Hz either. If you have output at 25Hz then you are doing very well.
What's up with Piega P-10 prices?
The retail for a pair was close to $10,000 US so perhaps the retail price listed is for one speaker. Or maybe the price listed is just wrong, it wouldn't be the only mistake in there or any such compilation.
Transitioning: back to solid state....
Unless I missed something here, how can you replace a tube integrated with a solid state amp? Doesn't a pre-amp of some sort need to be entered into the equation? If you actually did spend your college tution money on audio equipment I would have t...
Why can't I get clear sound?
The interconnects could not be causing the sound to be muffled. I am not familiar with your speakers, but it sounds like maybe the tweeters aren't working. Take off the grills and put your ear up to each driver while playing music at a moderate le...
Another look at directionality in cables
I would like to get on the Bundus bandwagon here. Energy in the form of electromagnetic waves travel down the cable from the amp to the speaker where they are converted into mechanical energy (the cone moves). The fact that current is flowing in t...
Can any stereo amp be bridged to mono ?
Well, I beg to differ. Using the technique described (making one input out of phase) will work with any amplifier. The correct terminology is actually "invert polarity of one input", not "out of phase."As for amps that are already bridged, I assum...
Can any stereo amp be bridged to mono ?
Yes, it will.
Best blues today
Are you sure about Johnny Winter and the drugs? I thought he had cleaned up. I remember reading somewhere that he is ill with a disease related to being albino. I know that albinism often leads to poor vision and blindness, which could explain why...
Help CJ premier 4 blowing fuses ??
It is usually a bad tube. Swap the tubes between channels. If the problem moves to the other channel, buy new tubes. If the problem stays in the left channel, you need a technician to repair it.It is amazing how much those fuses cost.
