Can I clean my records manually?
You may not like his attitude, but $2,000 or so for a Loricraft is a lot of money for many people. It buys some substantial equipment upgrades and/or significant amounts of software, particularly if it's used vinyl at 50 cents to a couple of bucks...
Cartridge choice? Ortofon or Goldring
Based only on what I've read, I would think that upgrading to the Ortofon 30 stylus would be the better bet. Even the 20 stylus is supposed to be a major improvement and serious bang for the buck. The place to check, once they're back up and runni...
Best affordable phono preamp?
The Wright phono preamp is considerably less than 5K but is very highly thought of. I can't say that I'll probably ever spend 5K on a phono preamp, but the Wright, based on what I've read kind of tickles my fancy.
Can I clean my records manually?
TBG: While I would agree with you that the Loricraft and Monks offer superior cleaning due to a) their basic design which concentrates the power of the vacuum in a very small area and b) the quality of the industrial vac motors in those units, I a...
Is Digital actually better than Analog?
Analog is much more work than digital. To do it seriously, you have to be prepared to do the outlay not just for hardware and software but also for cleaning (which need not be expensive) and the time for cleaning, whether you're purchasing new or ...
What should be the first component when upgrading?
If you are going to do the front end and the speakers at the same time, I would suggest buying one of the current DVD players (Pioneer, Panasonic come to mind) considered to have decent sound for around $100-$150 and allocating the rest for speake...
Denon DL 160
The tracking force is 1.6 g plus or minus .3 g, meaning you can track it between 1.3 and 1.9. My opinion, FWIW, is that most cartridges sound a lot better tracking at the high end of their range than the lower end. I'd certainly start out tracking...
Bob Dylan's Modern Times, a new Masterpiece?
I agree with Ben that it is a real stretch to to interpret any of Dylan's comments as a personal attack on Lanois. Frankly, I like quite a bit of the performance on MT, but I'm not so sure that it is a "masterpiece". This, of course, is entirely s...
PS audioPower Port Receptacle
Unless you have 20 amp male plugs on your equipment (if you do, you can order a 20 amp receptacle) you will grossly exceed the performance of the PS Audio with a standard special order (there's an oxymoron for you) 8200H (and be sure to specify 82...
Definition of "too Hi-Fi"
Both good responses above. If I was to try and crystalize or simplify, ("too high-fi" being the antithesis of the responses above) I'd say that "too high-fi" tends to draw your attention to the parts, as opposed to the whole musical experience, th...
Bob Dylan's Modern Times, a new Masterpiece?
I just got the LP today. Have got through sides 1-3, haven't done side 4 yet. I think it would be a stretch to call it a "masterpiece" and I definitely have to listen more. There is a "flatness", sound wise, to the record that Ben describes above,...
Denon 103R or 304?
The differences are pretty huge actually. I believe they are at totally different ends of the compliance spectrum. The 103R is going to work better on a high mass arm and the 304 is going to work better on a low mass arm. The Rega is more of a med...
Anyone can tell me the cartridge shown here?
Josep: While the AT95E stylus will fit the Basik body, it is not an "exact" fit (you can do a websearch to verify this). As such, considering the expense involved for the AT 120E which is a superior cartridge to both the Basik and a brand new AT95...
Anyone can tell me the cartridge shown here?
Looks like a Linn Basic MM, a low end Audio Technica. At the very least you should probably replace the stylus (which can be done apparently with an AT stylus, but it might be a bit tricky). Better yet, just order a new AT 120E which is a much bet...
Bob Dylan finally makes sense....
"Does the guy really need the money that bad?"Well, the partial (at least) answer is: "yes". Dylan should be looked at in an historical perspective when it comes to this. While I don't really appreciate his Victoria's Secret moments or the recent ...
