Professional vs. Consumer speakers
My Westlake monitors sound fantastic to me...MUCH better in fact than any "HiFi" speaker I have ever heard.

What are the benefits of a SET amp?
In my opinion, there are no benefits, unless you like distortion and bloat. Not to mention that there are very few really great speakers that are affordable and will work well with SET amplification. There are lots of high efficiency / high impeda...
Wynton Marsalis recommendations
I was amazed when I saw him, too. He has one called something like "Thick in the South". I have a copy and like it quite a lot. I'm not sure on the title, though.

Audio Research CD3
It is already obsolete, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I dig their take on supporting the redbook format, but GamuT beat them to the puch. BIG time (5.6 mHz)!
CD Player Recommendation
If you can hold out for 2-3 months, I would because:http://www.gamutaudio.com/preamps_dacs/cd.htmThis will retail for $3k, but as always, one or two 'goners will buy new early on and for whatever reason sell shortly thereafter.Based on the numbers...
Recommendations for a phono preamp for MMF5
The turntable should not be a consideration of which RIAA you choose. What really matters is what cartridge you plan on using. If you want to keep budget under control, I'd recommend choosing either a high output MC or an MM. Any of these would ea...
Nothing new under the sun?
I think it's the idea that the last 10% of a project takes 90% of the time. It will take an increasingly large amount of resources (e.g. time, capital investment, etc.) to make any tangible progress. That said, it is is a VERY lucrative time for t...
Rowland 2 or Accuphase A50?
If you like distortion and sloppy seconds, tubes are the way to go...
How come that when most audiophiles
I agree, and that is why the theoretical "best" way to go is a low-distortion (e.g. Bryston, Westlake, etc.) external crossover, remove ALL crossover components from the speakers, connect each driver to its own set of binding posts, and drive each...
What's the best sounding SS or Tube linestage pre?
The very best linestage preamplifier I have ever heard is the Boulder 2010. Since, as you stated in your post, you are looking for "not necessarily low price," this may be just be just the item for you (retail is ~$35k).
EAR preamp and phono products
The 834P is a decent unit, but you could do a LOT better for the same price, in my opinion. I'm really not a big fan of tubes though, so I guess my personal bias would steer me clear of these products.I think the solid-state MS Phonomena SMOKES th...
