USA - Europe Duties
Hi Doug, no problem... A word of caution regarding declarations: packages are INSURED on declared price. If (God forbid!) a package is lost, claims apply on declared price only!Risk....
Time for spring cleaning
Mrderrick & others--many thanks, I loved reading this! Let's team up & launch a virtual audio charity shop. I can chip in with cables and some old-fi piling dust... a couple of Micromega CD players (solo & optic), a Cambridge c100 pre,...
JMLAB MINI UTOPIA and ROOM PROBLEMS
Hi Dlyk, how high is yr ceiling in the 1st room? It looks like you have yr system in a resonant (open) shoe-box... My guess is U should start by tackling 1st reflection points, floor & side walls. Then tackle the back wall. Use rugs, old blank...
USA - Europe Duties
Doug28450, with all due respect, duties and VAT in the European Union are NOT "a relatively small portion of the total cost". They can easily reach 25-30% of the price declared (it's happened to me..). That's probably what Tejo@lisboa.pt is referr...
The winters lessons.
1st Update on winter lessons' lessons. I managed to locate certain vibration points using Jadem6's water trick (thanks again!). Placing cones accordingly, I gained treble energy and clarity using cones on the power supplies (CD and pre) rather tha...
Best speakers for small listening room
Joel, having lived in confined space, the advice above is sound (no pun). Recommended for easy set-up: JM labs with careful positioning, strongly recommended -- BBC LS3/5A (used; don't think U get them new nowadays), Audio Physic Step. Not easy to...
Top Ten Tube PreAmp of all time?
Dare I venture my definitive and humble opinion on the strength of many tubes that have crossed my threshold (and connected to my power circuit): C.A.T. Ultimate for line, for phono -- JP200 as per rcprince & detlof and SRPP (you had to build ...
Who R U?
David99, I must need a shrink (hello, Detlof & Larryr). It's taken me 6 months to reveal myself and although a newcomer at AG, I should have caught on earlier. Uncanny, the connections shared w/ you guys (& gals?), seems I'm not alone: let ...
BEST brand for Classical Recordings?
Jorge, IMHO as a classical music fan, "that label is best which offers the best performance of the work" (the one you refer, maybe)... As far as re-issues on CD go, Decca 24/96 remasters, Sony Classical, and EMI "art" offer good sound. But, in my ...
Audiophile spending
Hear hear, Garfish & Njonker! Abstract7, great & recurring question. I've met (few) people who listen to equipment rather than the music. There the ratio is overwhelmingly in favour of equip. BUT, this ratio is a tricky thing -- the moment...
Jazz at the Pawnshop
Tinman, I own the original LP for both, Cantate Domino and Jazz @ the Pawnshop, and the latter in plain CD. The difference is very marked in favour of vinyl, ambience and timbres leading the show. Don't know how the HD or XRCD compare, though...
Bringing back the dead?
Nice post, "3", takes us down memory lane! Following on from Peter (definitely, the Quads) I would add Apogee Scintillas: difficult to drive, but offering magic when well set up -- also a newish design concept at the time... and the little BBC LS3...
The winters lessons.
J, not only, but also, this is a FRENCH language dictionary; it seems to work better with Carmen than say, Buddy Guy or Mahler... Do you think we have a case of language-sensitivity?? (Seriously though, give the weight a try... you never know).Reg...
Nordost Red Dawn revII vs SPM
Rackon, do you find the Quattros emphasise the lower mid-range a bit? I am trying out the Quattros now (SPM ref for speakers) vs Bearlabs and Siltech silvers. Am using full sets from each manufacturer. I find (or am I imagining) that the Siltechs ...
The winters lessons.
Yup, as you say Jadem, the cone placed about 1/4 way back next to a screw that secures the power transformers onto the base of the box. Weight: I DO have a weight on the supply (though mine is heavy) -- forgot a compact dictionary i never use on t...
