Amps from the 1980's -- What gear holds up sonically? Reliably?
Pass labs stuff the big class A amps were great. Luxman the class A stuff the L560 I have recently had in my system and it was wonderful. Acuphase was mentioned as well. Classe dr stuff was good too  
Best Class A Amp under $2,000 used?
don't forget the Acuphase's and Luxmans that were pure class A many out there for under $2000 now.

for the money i think your first poster was spot on the bluesound vault 2 will do everything you need even though its got a dac just by pass it. its a good piece for future upgrades down the road. and the fact you can stream tidal from it controll... 
What to upgrade next?
I vote for tubes as well heres a good review of most of the new manufactures tubes. I like the gold lions as well run them in my 300b Finale audio F3008. http://wallofsound.ca/audioreviews/triode-roundup-seven-common-man-300b-tubes-compared/ 
Small room electrostat/ planar speaker?
AudioNote speakers are designed to be placed in the corners they may be ideal for your situation. there is a few models to look at and they come up used from time to time. I've owned electrostats and AudioNote and the AN's are very satisfying.

Get rid of those stock tubes first thing in your phono stage that is your first upgrade. Then like others I’d go for a better cart. If you can swing it a MC will be a huge step up to better sound, something like the audio technics at-art 9 is a hu...

Ok just re read the entiler post and the other guys could be on the right track with the over loading. but also look at Load of the cart as well.

I still dream of the musical enjoyment I had years ago when I ran a set of ProAc Response 2.5's still miss them to this day they just did something that sucked me into music. as well as the tablet 50's they were also lushes

take grannyrings advice go to parts conneXion and  look up their hook up wires buy in bulk and be done with it. they are a reputable supplier. they have many choices to look at as well. they are one stop shopping for all audiophile parts
