Big speakers, are they really the best way to get great sound?
OP, “…I think the overall sound will be unlike what hears in a ‘live’ setting, due to the seeming inability of speakers like these to sound intimate enough, when called for.”   I am not sure how many of these large speaker systems / electronics ...
Linn or T+A
Unfortunately I have only heard Linn in an evaluation mode. I had a Linn Select streamer / DAC (the middle priced version… three levels are available). I was comparing it to my Aurrender W20SE / Audio Research CD 9SE DAC. So $40K vs $12K. While it...

Have you found your "End-Game" speakers yet? I have. And it feels so good!!!
I love my Sonus Faber Amati Traditional… and are my end game speakers… well, err, that is… unless the stock market rises a lot.
Does a record player make that much of a difference??
The turntable, arm, cartridge and phono stage, all make very large differences. My general rule of thumb is the phono stage investment should be around the same as the Turntable and arm. These support getting the very best out of whatever cartrid...
Equalizer in a Hi Fi system
Hifi system yes. Audiophile system no. I think you can see the difference I am trying to make. With an audiophile system you are trying to achieve the absolutely best sound possible at every level of nuance and detail. All your components are lik...

Big speakers, are they really the best way to get great sound?
Fitting the speakers to the size of your room is a thing. Acoustical treatments can help adjust, but usually the best bet is to get speakers that operate within the sound pressure levels you enjoy without overloading the room. I chose Sonus Faber ...

An upgrade cycle lasts about a year for me… new components, interconnects, powercords, positioning, room treatments… then I don’t generally touch anything for about seven years. I don’t by my nature like to fiddle.
Dream Amps I Could Not Afford 20 Years Ago Now Undesirable
It is funny you mention this. I remember hearing and seeing these old guys haul out this really expensive Audio Research gear from the dealer in Phoenix fourth years ago. I couldn’t even think about owning in my wildest dreams. The sound was absol...
Warm Up Time/Cost of Operation
500 watts is a lot of power to use 24 x 7 for an hour or two of listening. At very least I would turn off over night.   Pass has an idle mode where a trickle of current is used to keep the circuits warm, Audio Research now has a 3 1/2 minute soft...
A reasonably priced DAC upgrade from Schiit Gumby
If you want to have a clear upgrade, with all aspects improving then you will probably need to spend at least 2x to 3x. Even this still puts you in the budge DAC range. But I would not upgrade until you could jump to something like a Yggdrasil… us...
Are cable “upgrades” just as likely to make your system sound worse?
Great example of how it is strongly dependent on your equipment. I had the privilege of auditioning a pair of Odin 2 in my system and they were the most amazing, musical, natural and detailed cables I have ever heard.
Do you think driver “break in” is real?
Yes, there is definitely breakin on speakers. I have broken in at least half a dozen good speakers. Dynamic speaker’s bass tends to sound woolly and not fully developed at first. Tweeter can be harsh. I have never tried to attribute some portion o...
Golden Ears?
Sorry for your loss. Small amounts of hearing loss (most often in the very high frequencies) to a very experienced listener have very little impact on enjoyment and skills in assessing audio systems. My female partner has always had better hearin...
