Sound without the Preamp ?
I removed my tubed preamp and plugged the balanced interconnects directly from the 2 tube monoblocks directly to an Accuphase CD player with volume control. A weird thing happened. The sound got better, more transparent, deeper and tighter base....

secretguy OPThe Oppo plays SACD as well, correct? A while back in Audiogon someone of note said they (Oppo) detect HDCD cd and turn a light on, but don’t have the Pacific Microsonic Devices PDM100 or PMD200 decoding chip in them to actually decode...
Are Pre-Amps necessary?
You have to take what’s said with a grain of salt anyone that has $$$ to be made out of something. (and no I don’t own Lightspeed Attenuator anymore) and when I did I still always said going direct was better still. It’s said Paul backed MQA to use...
Are Pre-Amps necessary?
Everything you own, every piece in the hifi chain, is designed with technical EE laws, equations and knowledge, like I said it takes both, but more so the tech side, and if it wasn’t I suggest you don’t go near it.Different if it were a painting w...
Are Pre-Amps necessary?
Your personal feeling when you listen without preamp, or with passive preamp is just that, a personal perspective.Sorry not just personal (subjective), but technical (objective) just as much if not more so.Cheers George
To pre-amp. or not to pre-amp!
Well, since George made mention of the impedance issue i now have to consider the Hegel P20, (george is not a friend of your wallet, be for warned).. Sorry about that. But the output to input impedance "rules" are needed all the way down the lin...
Are Pre-Amps necessary?
"Since it is equipped with high-class preamp, this player may also double as the heart of a small, but very fine high-end system." Odd that Burmester 089 should have been great direct, as recommended by the manufacturer. As it’s output is a 60 pos...
Are Pre-Amps necessary?
That list came from a post you made a while back. You don’t use a Metrum Acoustics Adagio dac now? Also understandable that you preferred the active buffer as the Khozmo, and most tube pre’s would not have suited the 10kohm input impedance of the SM...
Are Pre-Amps necessary?
The Russian euro15k Wagner Audio Dream Dac dac also uses this volume system for going to poweramp direct.https://www.monoandstereo.com/2016/06/wagner-audio-labs-super-r2r-dac.htmlCheers George
Are Pre-Amps necessary?
mitch2 Interesting, it has to quote:"The clever implementation of the volume control by lowering or raising the reference voltage "in the converters" is something I have never seen before and works flawlessly."" And, its volume control is neither ...
Are Pre-Amps necessary?
mitch2 I have owned a DAC with a passive VC, but do not remember seeing one with an active stage. That’s because most dac’s with VC’s do it in the digital domain, yours was a rare one to have a passive VC on it’s output inside the dac, and that...

The last Pacific Microsonic Devices PMD200 hdcd chips weren’t cheap https://www.widescreenreview.com/news_detail.php?id=2657 https://www.stereophile.com/news/10674/index.htmlthen Delta Sigma (bitstream) took over and and killed production. But now...
Are Pre-Amps necessary?
For the vinyl guys, as many of my customers have found. That even many stand alone phono stages these days, and there are many of them with low output impedance, and enough gain to drive the poweramp via a passive pre directly, that don’t need the ...

By the way I was listening to a RR recording yesterday. Great stuff. Yeah!!, the  RR cd's, hdcd or non hdcd 16/44 or the 24/96, blow all forms of music sources away for me, even the RR download stuff, except if you ever get to listen to the origin...

secretguy I guess HDCD failed in the marketplace. I don’t think it’s dead, as I believe Reference Recordings ( Keith O. Johnson) still use it, with 16bit and 24bit recordings. https://referencerecordings.com/https://referencerecordings.com/?s=HDC...
