Can you leave class D amps on and not ever turn them off? George can you give us a couple of examples of the ones that go up in smoke?Ones I rememberPanasonic PVR's, dvd/cd players, Samsung, Panasonic TV's, 2 x Velodyne CHT15 subs, 1 x Alesis 620, 1 x Nuforce 8 monoblock, 1x Halcro DM68 that had to be s...
Can you leave class D amps on and not ever turn them off? BTW, I have never experienced an SMPS giving up on me.... All have been rock solid. But if/when they go, it’s with far more fireworks that linear ones, and they’re not as tolerant to being out of spec as linear ones either. When/if just the caps le...
Class D Technology seanheis1 OPIt seems like some companies are aware of this and add tube input stages to try and add harmonics and meat back to the bone. Yep, agreed Sean, that's called microphonics, colorations, distortions or euphonics, and not the real harmoni...
Class D Technology sonicbeautyQuite some years ago, I purchased a pair of Bel Canto REF-1000.It ended up being my absolute worst purchase in my 30+ years in this hobby.I understand of course that those class "D" designs have much improved since.Still, I could not br...
Can you leave class D amps on and not ever turn them off? I don’t trust SMP power supplies, they are finicky to component (caps etc) agingMost Class D’s use smp (switch mode) power supplies, they do go up in smoke a bit more frequently than linear ones, and can be a fire hazzard if not at home.Cheers George
HOLO Audio Spring DAC: Affordable discrete R2R Multibit Dac, could be a winner. Here’s another very good review of the Holo that uses speakers jwm.http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/topic/110550-new-holo-audio-spring-dac-r2r-and-dsd/?do=findComment&comment=1737552 And good speaker at that, with ribbon Aurum Cantus tweeters a...

Don't think my preamp likes feeding signal to two seperate places. The xover as you say is 20kohm input, this combined with the se input 150kohm of the DS450 is a total loading of 17.6kohm. The owners manual states of the LS17 regarding the minimum load for it."20K ohms minimum load and 2000pF maximum capacitance...
Don't think my preamp likes feeding signal to two seperate places. Use only the single ended (rca) outputs of the LS17 as they are (350ohm) 1/2 the output impedance (700ohms) of the balanced and use a "Y" splitter to rca feed to both the 555 rca input (100kohm) and 450's rca inputs (150kohm). All should be fine t...
Don't think my preamp likes feeding signal to two seperate places. The paralleled combination of gfa555se and ARC 450D (150kohm) could be too much for the LS17’s output. Are you using the 555se’s unbalanced? because that is 100kohm where the balanced is only 10kohm.Cheers George
How long will tubes last in a pre-amp? Preamp tubes are not too stressed, they can last a very long time, except in this one I know of, Audible Illusions 3A they ran them very hard. https://www.google.com.au/search?q=Audible+Illusions+3a+preamp&espv=2&biw=1680&bih=944&s...
Transformer Noise If it feels light in your hand it's usually smp, if it's got nice weighty feel to it it's usually linear. I only recommend linear wall warts to be used with my Lightspeed Attenuators. Even though quality smp seem to work and sound fine, but the pr...
Transformer Noise I unplugged a small transformer that was next to where my amp was plugged in and the noise stopped immediately. I’d lay odds on it that wall wart, was a smp (switch mode) one, the pita for audiophiles, and it’s getting harder to get linear ones. S...
Class D Technology So I get the obvious strengths of Class D. Efficiency, power output & running cool which allows for small form factors. I also understand the weaknesses somewhat. 1. Non-linear & lots of distortion that needs to be cleaned up with an outpu... |
